What are your thoughts about Lamaze Class?

By pregnantnews

I start Lamaze class tonight and I was wondering if I am just wasting my time. I just want to know what everyone thought about it. Did it work for you? Was it more educational than anything?

Thanks.
my husband is military so it’s free. That’s pretty much the only reason why I am doing it. But I thought why not, because it won’t hurt anything.

waste of time, I went and totally forgot everything by the time it came to push. how hard is it to push? the staff at the hospital will tell you how to do things. they sure did tell me how.

Yes it is educational. It does teach breathing exercises that help. Good Luck.

Some people may find it usefull, but I felt like I had wasted my time and money. The class I was in had us all rotating and trying all these different birthing positions which were soooo uncomfortable and I would never even think of using anyway! I didn’t think back to the class at all in the middle of the birth either, which is why I think that you really can’t fully prepare for giving birth. When it is going on, you kind of just know what to do . . . just my opinion though! I am sure many women went to classes and thought it was a great experience, just not for me though.

I ended up having an emergency c-section, so not a lot of the class applied to me, besides the c-section video we had to watch. I thought the class was informative, but it wasn’t anything I couldn’t have researched on my own. It only cost my husband and I $50, so I figured why not.

One thing I did think was really helpful was the tour of the hospital. Granted, I could have done it for free outside the class. It was nice to see the labor and delivery rooms, the postpartum suites, the nursery, and even the OR’s where they perform c-section births. Overall, I thought that was the most helpful thing.

Best of luck!

I am so glad that I had that training. Even though I ended up having a cesarean (9lbs 13oz baby) the breathing techniques I learned in childbirth class really helped me endure until we all gave up and went for the c-section. It certainly kept me calm and I’ve found that those particular techniques are applicable in any tense, painful situation.

Never Used Lamaze because my midwife just had her own childbirth classes. You might get something out of them. You will also find your own way of breathing when you’re in labor. I doubt if I would have remembered “how” to breathe from a class! Most important thing in labor is not to hold your breath but breathe through the contractions. Slow, even breathing is best and concentrating on that rather than the pain is what helps get you through contractions.
I also found that exhaling while pushing was more effective for me than holding my breath would have been. I had a doctor tell me to “Hold your breath and bear down” when I was having my 3rd daughter and I screamed at her that I would not! My midwife always said it’s never a great idea. I discovered she was right.
Hope you get something out of it! Best Wishes!

waste of time!…I was so excited about going to mine because I wanted to learn everything I possibly could before the baby came. I went to ONE class..I had one of those hippie granola bar ladies who told us that when we were in labor to close our eyes and “breath in the fresh smell of spring flowers” and “exhale all the painful toxins in our bodies”..and that was pretty much it for me. Not to mention all the other crazy things they think will help you through labor when really I think the only thing that will truely help is an epidural and for it to be OVER! ..lol but dont let us get you down because I am sure you are excited so just go, you could have a completely different experience! good luck with your pregnancy hun!

I never took Lamaze, I took Bradley method. However, the statistics for c-sec. and episiotomies with Lamaze are not very different from the national average. The rate for c-sec. and episiotomies is much lower with the Bradley method.

I took Bradley method and it didn’t work for me. I ended up with an emergency c-section so none of it ended up applying to me any way. I did however like the socializing with all the other pregnant couples. I delivered a day before one of my classmates and we got to visit in the hospital.
