When should I register and start lamaze class or is it a waste of time?

By pregnantnews

I just reached 20 weeks pregnant with my first and I was wondering when I should register and start classes, or should I not bother because I have had people tell me that lamaze class is a total waste of time, and money, and that during birth you always have someone telling you to breath differently then you were taught in the class. So please point me in the right direction, thank you.

it’s a fun way to pass the time. you can sign up anytime after your 2nd trimester. if that’s part of your birthplan, to practice lamaze breathing, then go for it! i thought it was a waste of time and money so i didn’t do it though. it really isn’t that hard to push out a baby, it just hurts alot and no class can teach you how to ignore that awful burning, tearing sensation.

My doctor said Lamaze classes should be taken during the last trimester. My mom told me that once you take Lamaze classes you will have such a good grip on labor and delivery that you won’t be so worried about it. Please don’t believe people that say it’s a waste of time.

i might get a thumbs down for this, but im 29 wks and i still have not attended any classes. i asked my dr about it, and she said its all up to me if i want to or not, that im not a bad mother just cuz i choose not to take any classes. i have like 5 pregnancy books and i read a lot so i feel like im ok not to take classes. its all up to u. hey look at it this way, most women back in the day didnt have classes and they stil had their babies. like my mom and g-maa, they did it with no class or coaching. why cant you do it! believe in yourself and what you feel is best for you! good luck!

Where I’m from…if we don’t take those classes, the hospital will not allow my husband in the room while I give birth…so they offer those classes for free at the hospital. You can register anytime you want. We just found out the sex of our baby, so we are registering this month.

They’re certainly not necessary and there are several other birthing techniques other than lamaze that you may be interested in: the Bradley method, hypno-birthing, etc. Most of the time, there will be a nurse telling you when and how to breathe & when to push anyway. Also, those methods are really great if you absolutely do not plan on getting an epidural. But most women when they have an epidural don’t really need pain management techniques to cope with the pain.

Here, you can register late in your 2nd trimester or early in the 3rd.

if you have the $ and time then go ahead…
if not, then youll be fine. trust me…it kicks in as soon as youre in labor and youll know what to do with the help of the nurses and your OB.

Its up to you. But if you have the time to go I would say go. I went with my first pregnancy and got a lot of info some that may or may not help but you don’t know till you go. They also gave out coupons and samples for diapers, wipes, creams, bottles, calcium chew things (for the moms to be) and a free diaper bag. I know not every class in every state gives so much but you never know…I didn’t till I went.
