You may be able to. You’ll need to contact some midwives in the area and do some research.

It’s possible, but I honestly wouldn’t hold my breath… Hospital’s have policies.. you don’t just get to go in there and run the show. They have a certain way that they are required to do things (because they are a hospital)… that is why if you chose to have a midwife usually you would not deliver in a hospital unless there was an emergency… for reasons just like these.

Yes, it’s possible. One of the hospitals in my area has midwives on staff and women are given the option to birth naturally as they please. Personally, I think it’s the best of both worlds. Women are able to birth in a more natural way but they are right there in the hospital in case of any emergencies.
Call around to the different hospitals and midwives in your surrounding area and find out what they offer. Good luck!
P.S. My sister is going through this now. She is with a midwife that delivers in both a birthing center and in the hospital. It may not be as uncommon as you think.

my midwife delivered at home and at hospitals. if you are using insurance, they may require at 24 hour stay at the hospital if you’re delivering that. if you sign yourself out, they can refuse to pay. if you are having no complications and are fully hydrated, there is no need for an iv. most midwives will give you that option (i didn’t have one with my youngest son).

I had a totally natural birth in the hospital with a midwife. No IV, nothing. I left in 24 hours, you will probably not want to get up and around before than anyway but everyone is different. I requested only a midwife because I had a terrible experience with an OB GYN for my first pregnancy. You CAN tell them what you want, it is YOUR body and YOUR baby. I also did not allow any injections in my baby, sign paperwork beforehand so you are not caught off guard. They may try to talk you into it, stand firm because you know what is best for you and your child. Do not allow them to bully you during YOUR birth. Don’t let them take your baby from you, either, he or she needs you =) Contrary to what another poster said, you DO run the show, and remember that. Don’t allow unnecessary interventions, or it will lead to more and more and eventually a C section….good luck!
