Childbirth still very painful with epidural?

By pregnantnews

This in no way is about my life (it will be a few years atleast before i get pregnant.. knock on wood) But after reading some other questions i got curious…

Obviously natural childbirth is painful (no epidural etc)… but is childbirth with an epidural still extremely painful? I really think as much as i want a child i will still be very scared when i go into labor. What does it feel like and how painful is childbirth with an epidural?

Sometimes an epidural wont take which means it just wont work. Also epidurals only work for contractions. The dont want them to work while ur pushing so u can push the baby properly so u can feel all the burning etc of that

No childbirth with an epidural is an amazing experience in my opinion, i’ve had both and would go epidural all the way! No reason to suffer with all that pain unnecessairly

I t is not painful you might feel some discomfort but nothing like natural child birth. My friends had epidurals and really did not feel much but pressure I did it natural and it hurt but not like think it would. The pain all goes away when the baby is here!!

And no you do not feel the burning etc. during pushing you just feel pressure UNLESS they make the epidural go away or make the meds not strong ( they usually wont unless you have many problems and the baby will not come out!!! )

i had a son 3 months ago so this is still fresh in my mind. i had decided that i was not gonna have anything for pain well let me tell you i got to 5 cm and decided i was gonna get the epidural that was a great choice because from that point on i felt no pain and when i say no pain i mean none!!!!the epidural is great why feel pain when you don’t have to

With the right doctor who knows how to time it right, you shouldn’t feel anything! Nothing! Zip! You feel numb from the boobs down and some pressure when you have to push. It is a good send and there are just too many martyrs out there. Moms who get epidurals give birth to happy, healthy babies regardless of what you might hear.

With my first I felt no pain until they took the epidural out. I had tore something fierce and was in a lot of pain. My second I don’t think I felt anything at all. My third I went natural due to the fact that she came in under 2 hours. I did feel a lot of pain with my third but it was so fast I would choose that labor over the others.

it all depends on how good of an epidural you receive, child number one, natural, very very painful
child number two, great epidural, could not believe when they said he was there, i thought they were ling
child number 3, bad epidural , only toOK one side, then overdosed that side, i threw up the whole time and my one foot is still an extra size 12 years later
child number 4 ok epidural , a lot of pressure
child number 5, OK but wore off and was too close to give more medication, so was only good for 4 hours felt the whole birth

Of course it’s different for everybody. But I’ll tell you my story.

They can’t give you the epidural until you’re 3 cm dilated, so it’s a bit painful up until then. Mine was more painful up until then than normal because I was having shorter rest periods and longer contractions. When I got the epidural, it was wonderful. I felt no pain whatsoever. When it came time to push, I felt comfortable and it didn’t even hurt to push. Now, some women have to stop having the epidural in order to push. For me, I instinctively knew how to bear down, and I imagine all women would, but apparently for some it’s harder, and I imagine to push without it would be more painful. And don’t worry too much, when it’s all over, the pain will be gone having that child in your arms. I hope all goes well when you plan to have children!

An epidural numbs you from the waist down. You don’t feel anything, except when I was about to push I could feel pressure down there. I had one with my son. With my daughter I had nothing and it hurt like hell, it feels like really really bad period cramps. But it is so worth it in the end.

well, let’s see, i gave birth two months ago. my contractions were hurting so bad, i finally decided to get an epidural at 7centimeters. FIRST OF ALL, putting the epidural into my spine was painful. i kept moving, and crying, the guy had to stick it in my back like six times, it was horrible. once the epidural kicked in, i couldn’t feel the contractions any longer, and i started to relax. i started to fall asleep, & out of nowhere, my contractions started coming really strong again, and i felt like i had to push. i kept screaming, it was the worst pain i felt in my entire life & i thought i was going to DIE. they injected more epidural in me like three more times, but it had no effect, and it was a HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

but two months later, i totally forget what the pain even felt like, i just knew at the time, i was going to faint because it hurt that bad. but it’s worth everything.

if it is placed in your back correctly it will be just pressure and maybe some pain still far less painful than natural and safer then Demerol.

I had NO pain with an epidural. It was amazing! I could withstand the pain without, but I was actually able to rest after I got the epidural. I would highly recommend it!

I don’t know. I have 3 kids and never had a epidural.

I have 4 month old son. And I had epiurial. First I thought i will try to go without any pain killers but after 3 hours of pain i changed my mind (it was not really that bad but it is really hard to cope with that) :) And after that moment no pain at ALL. I was just waching TV until the very end :) And next day I was already in great shape and left hospital.

15

I had my first two children without any pain medication whatsoever. I was going to try the third time without it as well and decided to go ahead and get the epidural. What a God sent. I didn’t feel a thing. When it was time to push, the doctor had to tell me when I was having contraction. It doesn’t take the pain away afterwards though. But the pain afterwards is not excruciating as it is during labor.

16

I had epidural, but mine was not installed correctly (unfortunately). My right side was totally painless (I still felt lots of pressure, but trust me, it is nothing and you would not be concerned), but the left side was 100% in pain (and that was really bad). Based on that I can only tell you that epidural is amazing when installed properly. I would definitely use it again hoping that it would work this time.
Now, my baby is already 6 months old and I remember only good things about his birth. You may be scared right now, but when the time comes you will have lots of people helping you. You will do your best to deliver a healthy child and even all this pain will not ruin that.

no it isnt painful unless for some reason it didnt take then it would be like natural

I had natural labor with my first 2 and the labor were 24 hrs for my first and 28 hrs for my second. I was so scared that my third would be the same if not longer so I opted for the epidural. this is how it went, my water broke at home, no previous signs of labor, or contractions, just stood up off the couch and my water broke, contactions started about 10 minutes later and were about 2 minutes apart when they started this was the same for my first two, got to the hospital I was 3 centimeters dialated, contractions were piggyback and excruciating, I got an epi, and exactly 5 hours from the time my water broke I had my son. I felt nothing but tightening in my uterus, and when it came time to push, I was so numb from the waist down I couldn’t feel a thing, just lots of pressure, I couldn’t even lift my legs up by myself, needless to say I had to lay in bed for 8 hours after I had him because my legs were so numb I couldn’t even move them…. That was the only downfall, not sure what the heck size dose I got of the epi, but I wish I would have gotten it with my first 2 !!!!!
