How painful is natural childbirth?
ByI’m about to have my first child, and I want to go natural, without any drugs or epidural. In your experience on your FIRST child’s birth, (for those who have had a natural childbirth), how painful was it?
Does a doula help in the process?

I think that if you take child birth classes and have the right doc that natural child birth is great and painful, It’s the kinda pain that can not be described only felt! It’s very painful I opted for the epidural after dilated to 7 I tried but it was just to much.
Good luck

My first birth was natural.
My water broke at home & they had to induce me.
Being induced was very painful, with my second child I was not induced & everything went very well, with slight pain.

It sucks! I had my first 3 natural, and my 4th with an epidural. Go with the epidural, seriously! Unless you have an incredible threshhold for pain! I could have kicked myself in the a$$ after I had my 4th w/ the epidural for not having one the first 3 times. Don’t get me wrong, it is SO worth it, but why suffer if you don’t have to?

Doulas help, but it’s really all about how well you tolerate pain. I tried to go natural for my first, but it wore me out so much that I couldn’t push and they had to give me an epidural to relax me enough to push. My third baby was all natural and (believe it or not) I laughed all the way through labor and delivery! A natural delivery doesn’t mean that you’re going drug -free. It means the baby is born vaginally. My cousin is a LD Nurse and she recommends not going drug-free on your first delivery. First babies tend to take a lot longer and labor can be up to 36 hours. That’s a long time to be in that much pain.

I did not have a doula, but it all depends on your pain level. It did not hurt me at all, like it seemed to hurt the girl next to me. And we were dialated the same amount. If you can’t stand getting pricked by a pin or any type of pain it is best you go with the epidural. I also ended up having that with my first child because I started getting sick and spitting up and was pushing at the same time ( not on purpose). And I need to go ahead and get my princess out.( For her health.) But to be on the safe side keep an epidural as an option.

HI
I TOO WANTED A NATURAL CHILDBIRTH, FILLED OUT MY PLAN, NO DRUGS INVOLVED, BUT THAT ALL CHANGED.
IT IS PAINFUL, NOTHING LIKE YOU CAN IMAGINE. BUT GO WITH WHAT YOU FEEL. I HAD TO HAVE GAS AND AIR, PETHIDINE AND WAS JUST ABOUT TO HAVE AN EPIDURAL, THEY WERE JUST ABOUT TO DO IT, WHEN I FELT THE URGE TO PUSH, THE MIDWIFE TOLD ME NO, AS SHE HAD JUST CHECKED ME AND I WAS ONLY 6 CM, I KEPT ON AND ON, AND SHE EVENTUALLY AGREED TO RE EXAMINE ME AND I WAS FULLY DILATED, AND ENDED UP WITH NO EPIDURAL, AND TO BE HONEST I COPED AND WAS GLAD.
EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT PAIN TOLERENCE, AND IF YOU DO GO FOR PAIN RELIEF, THAT DOESNT MAKE YOU WEAK.
I OPTED FOR AN EPIDURAL ON MY OTHER 2, AND IT WAS FANTASTIC, THE PAIN WENT AND I ENJOYED LABOUR, IT WAS FANTASTIC..

My second child was a vaginal birth NO DRUGS. Compared to my first, who was a C-section because he was breach, I would go vaginal/no drugs ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!!!!!!!!!! Go in with the mind set that “it is only one day of your life of pain” and you will be fine. My labor was 22 hours and I’m still alive!!!! I was up and around within an hour with no recovery “down time”. I went snow skiing within weeks!
As far as a doula, I personally HATED having one. She was the nicest lady and I did not find her to have an over-bearing personality prior to my labor but there were so many times during labor that I just wanted to slap her. They are there to make suggestions, help you feel comfortable, etc but you know….all of that went out the window for me. I just wanted to be left alone. In fact, the only thing I wanted to do when I was having contractions was get on the floor on all fours and wait for the contraction to go away. Sounds pretty funny but that’s what I did.
So………go for it!!!!!!!!!!! From personal experience, I wished I could have had all three of my kids that way (the third was a C too…breach as well). It really isn’t that bad.
Good luck to you, whatever you decide.

I think if you have a child natural it should not be your 1st.I have 3 kids and had my 1st natural and was in pure pain from Thu-Sat.You will not ever understand untill you have it.I also had my 2nd child natural because I got to the hospital to late and was fine and my 3rd child I went with the epidural and it was heaven. Also the epidural does not work on everyone.GOOD LUCK

My fist child was drug free. I did not take the pre-birth classes either. It hurt sometimes really bad, other times the pain faded away. Once I held my daughter in my arms, I totally forgot the pain. My second I tried pain killers but it didnt do anything, I honestly think they just faked using them.

i didnt take any classes or get a doula or anything like that i just brought my mom and my husband with me to the hospital for support and i did my childbirth all natural and it really didnt bother me at all i sat up and talked and laughed and played cards the whole time i was in labor my nurse was getting ready to take me back to have a c-section because she thought that i was not progressing and then she checked me because i told her that i was feeling alot of pressure and then she told me that i could start pushing but i really didnt have that much pain the whole time that i was in labor the worst part of the whole labor was when she put the iv in my arm and i did not have an epidural or spinal or anything like that

I had my first child on 10/23 at 31 weeks of pregnancy…from the 1st contraction to the time my son was born was 6 hours…the 1st 3 hours the pain was very manageable…the last 3 it was pretty intense. Although I felt the contractions in my lower belly…My BACK was hurting so bad. I could not lay on my back at all…I had to lay on my side most of the time. I wanted and epidural but my labor progressed so quickly there wasn’t time for one…the part I found surprisingly painful is when the told me to push…I have heard so many women say it felt better to push…NO WAY…that was really uncomfortable…it really hurt. So they told me to push and I stopped in the middle of pushing and announced to the whole room that I was not going to do it. And then the funniest thing happened…MY BODY kinda just pushed my son out on it’s own. It was like I had no control and he was out on the 3rd push…it happened so fast that they told me to STOP pushing because I was tearing but like I said…it felt like I had no control. Hope this helps!

It’s so painful that most women prefer to get a hypodermic needle to the back rather than go through it. Seriously, an epidural is a wonderful, wonderful thing. You are still totally and completely aware, you still hurt, you still push…but you are able to concentrate on the birth more and less on the pain. But hey, if you can do it…more power to you. It makes for great bragging rights if nothing else.

It totally depends on the person, the amount of support she gets durning, how focused/metatative mom can get durning, the size of the baby and even the baby’s position. Some women have very little or no pain, while others have pain so bad they swear off having another child.
I was in less pain if I could get up and move around. With my first I got stuck on the bed and having to sit there was aweful. I’m not one that can meditate by myself and with my first I was stuck on the labor bed and not allowed to get up. I ended up getting an epidural because my labor was progressing slowly and every contraction hurt. With my third I was able to drastically reduce the labor pains by bouncing on a labor ball (kinda like an excerise ball).
if you can afford it, get the doula or a real midwife. Both will sit right there with you through the entire labor helping you reduce the pain, giving you ideas on what might work, talking to the nurses (those commando nurses are horrible, but it seems every hospital has one). I can not recommend having one with you enough.

First. Every woman’s body and how it reacts to childbirth is different. But I have to say this…DON’T TRY TO BE A HERO!!! My aunt, who is an OBY/GYN told me from the beginning to just get the epi because there is no point in putting yourself through that PAIN!! Even though you haven’t stated why you prefer to go natural, do you really want to focus on all that pain you are gonna have while you are having contractions? It can be pretty intense! Plus I really think it makes you really really tired and even grumpier than you would normally be if you just got an epidural (no pain drugs, just the anesthetic).
I had my first (and only) child vaginally with only an epidural. I got my first dose at about 2:45 am and had 3 or 4 doses until I started pushing at about 10:30 am. I pushed her out at 11:15 am. Towards the end, they wouldn’t give me more because epi they wanted me to be able to feel myself push. It didn’t hurt that badly (but it still hurt) and to tell you the truth, you probably aren’t going to remember how bad it felt anyway. Its all worth it in the end. I was out of bed getting cleaned up and walking to go get something to eat like 45 minutes after I had her, so don’t worry about an epidural incompacitating you.

Well, I had to have an epidural in for my 1st one as he was born breech, and they had to cut me to get him out in the end. My second child, again was around the wrong way, not breech, just facing around the wrong way. They induced me with her and gave me something to speed up the birth, and it was painful, so I wanted to get an epidural, but just before they got me set up for it, my daughter came. Yes it was painful, but afterwards I just got up and held her. I felt great. My 3rd child was a face first, again in a difficult position, just my bloody luck, but he was in such a hurry to come out. I broke water and somehow got me and him up onto the bed before he bungy jumped out. It scared the midwife because he would have landed on the floor. He’s been the same ever since. So I’ve had 3 of the worst kinds of birth needed/wanted afterwards drugs, but I didn’t have a choice really. But I felt really good after the births that I had drug free. Yes it hurts, but as I felt it, you roll with the wave of pains, breath and move through it, and just remember your not a failure if you do decide you need the drugs, the reward comes afterwards.

If you choose to have a natural child birth you are amazing. I tried to deliver my first on pitosin for 26 hours naturally. after that long I chose to get an epidural. My advice to you is get a doula they help alot. they know pressure points that relieve the pain from your abdomen. If you have a high pain tollerance then you should be just fine delivering a child naturally as long as your labor isn’t abnormally long.

Labor and delivery are extremely painful. I had an epidural with my first, nothing with the second (not by choice) and my third I had to have an unexpected c-section. Give me the pain relief any day. And if you want to do it natural and end up needing the drugs for pain, don’t beat yourself up about it. The result is still the same regardless of what methods you use. A beautiful baby!

I have had 4 children. the first was a c-section because of cephlo-pelvic disproportion, the second was v-bac, (vaginal birth after c-sect) the third was v-bac, and the fourth was all natural. ( i did have 2 Tylenol after her birth for the headache i had given myself from screaming at her daddy).
I kinda liked the natural better, although it was very painful and i felt every movement, i was up and walking 30 min. after her delivery. the epidurals I had with 2 and 3 i had to wait for a few hours to let it wear off and regain feeling, I had headaches, chills, low blood pressure, etc from epi meds. I don’t know if i could have done natural for my first one but I probably would have tried. (Epidurals are heaven sent though when it comes to pain, and you don’t go loony when you get it. You stay alert, just no pain!!!!)
