Is anyone planning (or had) a midwife-assisted home birth? What made you choose it?

By pregnantnews

I’ve read many books on natural childbirth and talked to many mothers; but no one seems to be in favor of this option. The most common answer I get is that they wouldn’t want to “chance it” with a home birth. I have seen a few hospital births and it just does not seem like the most comfortable (or safe) place to birth.

My own mother is against it too. What are your thoughts or experiences?

If something goes wrong at home you have to wait for an ambulance to get there. If your at the hospital they fix any difficulties right away. What if there is something wrong with the baby?

I am seriously researching it this time around. I have no insurance and am not eligible for any assistance. (Pregnancy is one heck of a pre-existing condition). I had a Doula with my last child. I am not anti-prenatal care, but they went just a little over board and I am not so sure I want to do it the same way again. Especially if I have to be private pay.
I do think you have to feel secure and have a low risk pregnancy to do it at home.
Do your research and make sure you have skilled support such as a midwife and make an educated decision.

They usually only let you have a home birth if you are a low risk pregnancy.

How far you live from the hospital if something does go wrong?
Are there any birthing centers near you? they are much more comfortable than hospitals.

I will hopefully be able to have my next one either at home or in a birthing center as I did not have a very nice experience in hospital.

I had my child in a hospital and I’m glad I did because she ended up having some breathing problems, so it was nice we were at the hospital and they were able to take care of her right away.

But I know a few people who have had home births and were very happy with them. My pastors wife had all three of hers at home and loved it, and my mother in-law had all three of her children at home as well (my husband was born in a bus lol)

Personally if we had one, I would choose a birthing center over a home or hospital birth….it gives you the comfort of home, and more options for delivery.

If I was you though definetly have a mid-wife, its important to have someone there who knows what they’re doing and warning signs for anything dangerous.
