Tell me about your experiece w/ childbirth in water?

By pregnantnews

When I get pregnant (!) I want to have a natural childbirth in water. Pros/Cons/Liked/Disliked, etc?? Is that something all bigger hopitals offer, or would I need to go somewhere special? Is it covered by insurance like a regular birth?

So long as you aren’t having any complications you should be able to do this anywhere that it is offered. Insurance doesn’t ususally have a problem with it because they don’t have anything extra to pay for.
I live in a very small town, but my hospital still offers this.

I say go for it and good for you! Try to do alot of walking around early in your labor though, it helps to speed things along. Make sure you have lots of options for movement, don’t let yourself get confined to a bed unless you have to.

Good Luck!

depends on type of insurance and why take a risk……..

you will have to find a special place. most places do not offer water birith though I have heard it is fabulous!!! it decreases the pain you feel and baby is born in a familiar environment

I used the tub during labor and didn’t find it as enjoyable as I’d hoped. Mainly because the water can’t be over a certain temp (90 degrees or so) and it just felt like a bath going cold to me. Of course it was still fairly relaxing and I think it’d be a good help in the delivery itself. I just can’t get over the idea of the water getting all “icky” Of course I’m also one of those moms who says No, wash it before you try to hand it to me!

If you have a partner able to get in with you it’d be nice to just lean back and float while they support you. I’ve never heard of there being insurance issues and many hospitals are offering water births as an option. If you think it’s something you’d be interested in you just have to let them know and they’ll have the tub set up and ready, and it’s not set in stone. You can get in and out and change you’re mind at the last second and nobody’s going to care. It’s really just there as an option like a ball or all the different positions. You’ll probably go through them all as one is more comfortable then another.
