Stadol (sp?) is apparently very funny for those around you (my best friend had this and acted like a loon), but I know that my dr. won't give you stadol when you are going to be pushing soon because you actually need your whits about you to push a baby out. ask your dr. what can be done...you may have to resort to methods that are not medicine at all, but breathing tecniques etc...AKA natural labor. I had an epidural (2 actually) with my first son and i hated every minute of getting them, but loved having them for the most part.

I was loopy as fruit loops and had a much harder time pushing. I m not sure what drugs they will give you that will help with the pain like an epi. I just know from my experience that those drugs are more likely to make you not quite so alert while in active labor. And they can't be given close to delivery, (they'll make baby sleepy/sedated at birth) so they aren't really a very GOOD option. My husband asked me to get one so we could sleep before I had him. The demerol or nubane WILL get to the baby,and effect them. The epidural will not.Teach yourself breathing as well,as well as pain management techniques.
