What kind of pain medication did you have during labor, delivery and afterwards?
ByI’m curous to know the effects of different medications on different people. Which ones didn’t work, which ones did and such.
Don’t bother telling me about all natural childbirth, I’ve already done it.

My kids are young adults now. With my first I had something given through the IV, it took some of the pain away, but I was very aware of the discomfort. With my second, who came too fast, I didn’t get anything. If I was to have a baby now, I’d go with an epidural. I had one for surgery and had no complications.

I’ve done natural birth a couple of times. And the other 2 times I had a IV pain med called Stadol. It didn’t stop the pain….it only makes you drowsy and you sleep through some of the contractions. After delivery my Dr. gave me prescription Motrin. It works pretty well.

I had a epidural for pain, I had a c-section, delivery.
Afterwards, I was givin darvocet and motrin.
Pain was ok after, but I wished for something stronger that would keep me awake. (1st child)

First I got Stadol, because I had to wait until I had finished a full IV bag of fluid before I could get an epidural. It didn’t do much, just take the edge off a little.
The epidural did the trick, worked like a charm. It turned out to be absolutely necessary later as I ended up having a C-Section.
I think I had Percocet afterwards.

I went totally natural until they told me I was 6 cm…. I panicked and went straight for the epidural. It was awesome while I was labouring. I was totally myself, and totally relaxed… no pain at all!! Unfortunately, I ended up needing a c-section, so they pumped up the amount of medicine running through the epidural. By the time I was prepped for the surgery, I was having a hard time breathing, and was basically sleeping through the whole thing… I think it was just too much too fast.
I’m not sure what happens after a vaginal delivery… I think they would take the epidural out soon after delivery, and then you would be given oral medication.
I watched my sister try for natural childbirth, and avoided the epidural… she was “high as a kite” from all the other drugs, that but the time she had the epidural, she doesn’t remember much.
I would recommend going straight to the epidural.

Love me some pain medication!
I’ve had two csections and the first one was with an epidural, the second a spinal block. I liked the epidural better, can’t really say why but I just liked the overall experince of it better. For a couple hours after birth I had a morphine pump, didn’t do a whole lot. They also gave me some other pain meds and all of them worked except for Mepregin (am I spelling that right?) that made me feel like my head was floating over my body and I was still in pain. Motrin works well too in the days afterwards.

With my first I had stadol & an epidural … with my second just an epidural. Stadol was great to hold me over until I was ready for the epidural. You wouldn’t have a tooth pulled without novacaine (sp?) so why have a baby without an epidural. They no longer harm the baby and mothers are awake and well (majority of the time).

I was in labor for 38 hours with our daughter. Darn tootin I asked for those drugs, lol! They gave me stedol (spelling?) at first because they epidural guy wasnt there yet. It made me feel happy but made my nose itch like MAD. The epidural was GREAT. I didnt even know the exact moment they put it in. It took away all the pain and I was able to visit with family and rest up. Thank God for that! Unfortunately, the only guy who could give epidurals left because I was the only one giving birth at the time. By the time I had to push, my epidural had worn off!!! Had to do the worst part with no pain killers, but at least I had gotten some rest earlier. Only thing that sucked was, I got sick, and since I was half paralyzed, I couldnt move myself to vomit. I was in the middle of labor and they had to strip and clean me up while supporting my weight. But that was just a blip on the radar. Had a nasty episiotomy that ALMOST went all the way thru to my ummm… hind end. Yeah, fun. Not to scare you or anything, lol. Post-birth, they gave me Percoset (spelling?) and Ibuprofen. The percoset made my mind really fuzzy, on top of the exhaustion. People had to tell me things a few times before it soaked in, lol. But every time I got up, it felt like i was going to tear in half, and that was WITH the drugs. Thats my experience, hope it helped. I will NEVER go all natural, lol. Some say they want the full “experience” and be “present”, and personally, I dont think a woman who is out of her mind with pain is all that with it. I preferred my epidural time when I could actually be sane. Good luck, and God bless. Congrats on your angel.

i had epidurals with all 3 of my babies. they worked great, with my first i did get the epidural headache though, it was bad felt like a pounding migraine everytime i was upright. went away after a week, they could have put a blood patch in at the hospital but never mentioned it to me (was a bad hospital apparently) thats the only problem i have ever had though, i loved em. afterwards i never needed pain meds except with my 2nd, she came out posterior and her head was crooked, almost 3 hours of pushing and she fractured my tailbone coming out. i honestly found motrin 800mg to work the best for the pain. good luck

I had an epidural at 4cm, I wasn’t in pain but was moving along rather quickly so my nurse went ahead and ordered it. After wards I had lortab and Tylenol 3. Not together! I had a 3rd degree episiotomy (that hurt like I couldn’t believe). Which ever pain killer they sent me home on didn’t help so the called in the other for me. However it didn’t help either. During labor I recommend holding out and just receiving the epidural, if the pain is bearable until you can receive epidural. So that you will be fully aware of whats going on and not groggy after wards. Good Luck!!

I had phenergan and nubain with my first two pregnancies, this is an iv combination and it makes you drowsy and takes some of the pain away, but in the more active phase of labor it didnt work well. I ended up with epidurals both times, which I highly recommend, but make sure that you are about 4 cm before you get it or it will slow down the labor process. Since my first two were c/s so I scheduled the third c/s, but epidural all the way.

I’ve had all 3 of mine naturally with just demerol. It just took the edge off a little. But I had short labors so I never had time for an epidural anyways, even if I wanted one. Actually with the first I got Neubane first, but it just about stopped my heart…so they reversed it. It relaxed me just a little too much.! After that is when they gave me the demerol. Afterwards with the first 2 I had tylenol because of my episiotomies, but with the 3rd I wasnt in any pain at all afterwards because I didnt have to have that episiotomy. My baby was premature, so he was small enough not to have one done. Im guessing most just take the edge off unless you get an actual epidural, but I wouldnt get one. I know too many people that had bad side effects from an epidural like my best friend who just recently had one in November and she is still suffering from side effects. Its just a risk you have to be willing to take like with anything else.
