Why does it seem doctor’s and hospitals are against Natural childbirth?
ByI am just curious why it seems that *most* doctors and hospitals are not supportive of women who want natural childbirth…as in drug and intervention free (no epidural, no ivs, no being strapped down). It seems like everyone I’ve talked to in the medical profession just roll their eyes when I talk about wanting to do natural and med free childbirth. Why is this?

because doctors make more money the more treatments you get. plus they think its more painful. personally, i think natural is better.

Because they are absolutely certain that their way is best. It’s the medical arrogance factor.
Consider a midwife who will be supportive, not rude.

because if you do it natural, then the hospitals and doctors wont make any money, plain and simple

Many women change their minds halfway through and want the drugs. Another reason is because that makes it harder on the doctor having to have you be in pain and moving around.

They don’t make as much money off you that way! Most women change their minds once they get there and it’s in full swing and you don’t need a hospital for a natural child birth in the first place!

They don’t want to wait all night! They rather just get it over with so they can go home on time. :3

That’s why you get a midwife instead Doctors treat pregnancy like a disease and a midwife treats it as it is… a pregnancy. A midwife will be more apt to follow your wishes

Well, I’m sure if you ask people, you’ll get two types of responses
1. Because they want more money
or
2. Because it can cause serious pain/complications

Because hospitals are a business and they want you in, the baby out, and a new patient in fast. They don’t want to wait around for a mother to take the time to naturally have her baby. This is why c-sections are on the rise…meds = stress to the baby…stress to the baby = c-section.

Because medicine in the US is all about profit. If you opt for a natural childbirth, they can’t bill you!
Where on earth do they strap women down to have a baby? Holy crap. That’s scary… And you don’t need an IV to have a baby, even if you opt for pain meds.
Natural childbirth generally means a vaginal delivery. You can have a natural birth with pain control.

I didnt have that experience, and granted was at one that was conisdered a top hospital for OB/GYN. But as the above ones say, hospitals are really businesses.

A huge problem is women that say they want to go all natural and then they change their minds at the last minute and want pain relief when it’s not possible. A lot of women underestimate the pain of child birth. Also, I’m sure the hospitals don’t mind making extra money using modern methods of child birth. I’ve heard epidurals can cause very bad back problems for women, for life. Good luck whatever which way you choose to go.

It seems odd to me to. Science has gotten us this far, why not use it. It’s given people a less painful birth, hasn’t it? With a team of professionals there you’re safer. Why risk some ones life (Yours and a baby’s) if you don’t need to. I’m not a proffsional and I don’t pretend to be, ask a doctor next time he rolls his/her eyes. Each of them must have a different reason.

I’m not sure…I’ve been running into the exact same thing. I have a fairly high pain tolerance, and I don’t want to have to worry about an epidural or other pain meds unless I absolutely can’t handle it. Everyone I talk to laughs it off, even the woman that was teaching my childbirth class…I’m curious to see if anyone knows why that is too! Good luck with everything!

I don’t think it so much that they are against it, rather that they hear mothers saying they wnt a natural, drug free birth all the time. I was all natural and drug free for mine. I had one midwife in the room plus my family. I had the feeling they were quite happy about that because it freed up staff to attend to other labouring women.

thats because everyone has a view of ‘why be in pain when you dont have to’ i hate it so much…
and its your choice they cannot do anything to you without your consent..if your drr has a poblem with it, go find another one..and i havent heard of anyone being strapped down since the early 60’s

I think they just want to cover themselves in case something goes wrong. It more of a liability thing I feel.

The child’s head gets squashed and he has to twist around in the birth canal to get out. The mother is in labor and in pain for hours and hours. Who the heck would want that?
Anyway, ditch your obstetrician and find a nurse midwife. 49 out of 50 times, that’s sufficient. The obstetrician is covering his -ss for the 2% problem case.

I had that happen and then I switched to a nurse midwife. She was very supportive. I delivered in a birth center at a hospital, and the staff there was really supportive also. It was great. I had my baby with no pain meds, no pitocin (not even to help deliver the placenta), and no IV. I was able to drink what I wished, and I was basically left alone with my boyfriend to labor peacefully until I was 8cm. I walked, changed position, sat in the tub, etc. My midwife helped get me through the last bit and encouraged me while I pushed. She did her best to ensure I didn’t tear, but I did tear a tiny bit (3 stitches). Just be firm about what yo want, and don’t be afraid to switch doctors if yours isn’t supportive. This baby was my first, and I had the delivery I wanted because I did my research and stuck to my birth plan. And…I had a wonderful midwife and L&D staff. Good luck.

I had that problem too. None of the hospitals around here will allow natural childbirth. I went to a birth center instead. I used the Bradley method with all four of mine.
