After you first birth experience, what do you want to happen differently next time?
ByI had a wonderful birth, but really regret it being in hospital and that breastfeeding didnt go so well. We had to give birth in hospital because my daughter was very ill and was lucky to survive.
If / when i have another baby, its really cleared things up for me. I want a water birth and i want it to be at home.
Of course they will only let me if the baby is well antenatally.
I wonder if you can use gas and air in home birth, because i found it really helped.

Mine was also wonderful but I wish I could have had a little more pain reliever. I had an epidural but they had to slow down the administration of the medicine b/c my pressure was dropping. I hope that doesn’t happen again. I had to have a oxygen mask on my face for God’s sake lol.

You can use gas and air in a home birth (I spoke to my midwife about it in the early part of being pregnant).
I will have to have a hospital birth next time (as I did this time) but I will be more vocal about what is happening. I felt that I lost control when they were trying to speed my labour up. The consultant said that I would probably have a c-section next time but I am unsure if this is the route that I want to go down. I would prefer to have a trial of labour and then proceed to a section if necessary.

if you live in uk, gas and air can be supplied at home by midwife. but its only a tiny canister! wont last long.
i would just like to try labour as i had an elective c-section as jacob was breech. just to even feel what a contraction is like! its wierd to have a baby but not know that.

The nurse comes fully equipped with a portable gas and air. My friend had an at-home birth and it cost her 5000 pounds.

I had to be induced, be monitored constantly, have my waters broken and had an emergency c section, then to top it off I wasn’t given the option of breast feeding – I came out of surgery to find my son already drinking from a bottle! This time I really want to have a vaginal birth but as yet I don’t know if it will be a possibility – consultant appointment in 4 weeks will decide! I definately don’t want to be induced and if possible I want to be monitored with a hand held doppler so I can move around! And I desperately want to breast feed!
I think you can use gas and air at home – they bring a big cannister with them, also you can hire pools and tens machines and birthing balls to help at home!!

my birth experience was fantastic to, but i would change a few things next time round. i wouldn’t have an epidural, i have terrible willpower and gave in at the last minute. the epidural literally just kicked in then it was time to push, if i’d just held on for 1 more hour i could have done it. also i wouldn’t have the injection that help deliver the placenta, i had a bad reaction to it and was vomiting for hours after the birth, which also stopped me breast feeding. the last thing i’d change is that i wouldn’t have my mother at the birth, her and my partner dont get on, and she promised me that she would put that aside as it was my first child and i really wanted her there. needless to say she didn’t keep her word and spent the whole of my labour scowling at my partner everytime he touched me and throwing him dirty looks everytime he said something. i didnt really take much notice at the time, was to busy with other things obviously, but looking back it really upsets me, it was surposed to be a happy magical time for me and my partner but it was hampered by my mums sarcastic comments. we didnt talk for 2 months after, that i regret. i think i’d go for a home water birth next time too

had a good birth experience…. everything went quite quickly, had an epidural and then had to have a c-section…. just wonder now if I haven’t had the epidural if I would deliver vaginally. But my c-section recovery was very good too, no pain. Perhaps next time I would want to be more informed of what type of drugs the hospital had to offer.

Gas and Air is the only pain relief (apart from paracetamol!!) that you can have during a home/water birth.
I had an epidural with my first and didn’t want one with my second…..and didn’t have one…..boy it doesn’t half hurt does it?! It was fantastic tho and with our 3rd I won’t…fingers crossed…have one either.
Good luck. x

I loved my son’s birth as he was born in the middle of the SARS epidemic and we weren’t allowed any visitors. My husband was allowed to be there, but that was it. I loved it. It gave us so much time to bond and rest! And there were certain people we did not wish to come visit, so that was a ligitimate reason they couldn’t come…Wow. I sound really nasty! But it was so wonderful to have two full days of peace and quiet before we came home. We made sure to visit with our families on the way home, and had them visit with us, so everybody got to visit the baby eventually.

Next time, (if my husband lets me! he’s still traumatized)i am gonna really try not to hav an epidural as i couldnt feel my contractions properly & after 21 hrs of labour& 3hrs of pushing, i had to hav emergancy forceps with an a episiotomy….! ow, lol. Also i’d hav my husband stay longer after the baby was born, he left me just after i had the baby to go home to sleep but he ended up not bonding well wiv our baby until now. i’d like a home birth idealy but i was induced with hypertension 1st time, so mite not b able too. Gas & air is great but a little canister at home mite not last! not the rate i was puffing on it!

Nothing, it was pretty much perfect. I know now to use my own pads from the start, cuz I hated the hospital ones. I also would be more comfortable taking care of my child right away, the first time I was way too nervous and clueless and had no confidence in myself.

As it turns out we went the complete way.
Our first was at a birthing center with home style birthing rooms not the usual OR atmosphere.
Our oldest was born asphyxia and we almost lost him. The oxygen in the room did not work and the nurse literally threw him over her shoulder and ran out of the room to get O2.
That was fortuitous because there was a neonatologist ready to go home standing in the door when the nurse got there.
Had it not happened like that we would have lost him at full term and 8.5 lb.s.
Our second was in the surgical delivery room with full monitors.
We were happy for that.
