During a water birth are you allowed anything for pain?

By pregnantnews

Hello! My husband and I have decided on water birth. My only concern is with my previous labor’s ( normal delivery ) I was able to get a mild pain reliever which helped with the back labor. I’m more about all natural ways to deliver so I won’t ask for an epidural! ( it also scares me ) lol
I’m wondering will I be able to do the same during a water birth? I’ll be talkin with my midwife about this but just wondered if there was anything more natural to help with the back pain while I labor in the tub?
This is our last baby, and it is very exciting for us to have the water birth… but I want to make sure I can be as comfy as possible.. so I can function and remember every part of it.

If you are having the birth in a hospital, then there are pain meds other than an epidural that you can have. If you are having your baby at a birth center, then you have to ask your midwife. In some states, they are allowed to administer certain medications, in others, none at all.

Yep! You can have any of the traditional pain relievers that you would have in a room birth. Good Luck, water births are exciting! The nice warm water is also nice on your back. Relaxes you a bit more!

You can get all sorts of things. The best is a spinal morphine. Its delivered like an epidural, but its a one time dose so you’re safe to be in the water.

You can also get an IV injection of demerol (which will leave you with no memory of the process, so i suggest you DONT get it) or stadol, which is an excellent choice. They put in the IV, give you the dose, and tape it off, or remove it.

I did water birth, but had to opt for the stool during the heat of pushing as my son wasnt clearing my pelvis in that position.

ive been discussing a water birth with my midwife and she has been discussing pain relief for during..so i assume so! i know you can definatly have gas and air because when she showed me the tub room she was explaining how the gas and air would work in that room.
i assume you probably cant have an epidural because you wont be able to sit properly in the water but as you dont want one i guess thats not a problem!!

i’m not sure but it sounds cool…
i’m planning on a no-medication birth myself, for my second child. I had a pretty easy time with my first but we all know that anything can happen so my mind will stay open.
Ha, my husband can kiss my butt for wanting to have say in the labor plans…. you’re a kinder woman than i am!!

Well I do know that you can’t get an epidural, but since you already said you don’t want one that shouldn’t be an issue. I’m sure that with a water birth you can get any kind of pain reliever that is allowed during a normal birth as long as it isn’t to be left in. I know that there are certain injections that they give and certain pain relief gasses, but you will have to talk to your midwife about what will be available to you. I have also heard of women using acupuncture (sp?) as a natural method for pain relief. The insert it into the ear right when labor starts and take it out after the baby is born. I’ve heard it works amazing if you are looking into natural pain relief methods.

Lol, I’m the opposite of you, I would love to have a water birth but I’m afraid to not have an epidural. I have a very low tolerance for pain. I too want to remember every part of giving birth. I don’t think it’s quite possible though. Even with an epidural I was in such a daze over the fact that I was actually giving birth that I still remember very little from having my first.

Good luck and congrats!
