Home births? I’m a little scared?

Question by Charlotte248: Home births? I’m a little scared?
Hi everyone. Im currently expecting a baby girl (this is my 1st) who will be named Shea Isabella (Shea pronounced like Shay). My due date is approaching (im 38 weeks) and the doctor says little Shea could come any day now. My husband and i were recently preparing for the birth and i told him i was scared about delivering, like what if something goes wrong and how much its going to hurt and everything, so he said “Well if it’ll make you more comfortable, we could always have a home birth”. And im thinking its a good idea. Am i right? Should i have a home birth?

~And by the way, i already have a midwife who has been working with me and getting me ready for the delivery. And i have been attending birthing classes regularly.~

Also, would it be a good idea to get a birthing tub so i can deliver in the water?

If this is your first pregnancy I wouldn’t consider a home birth – but that’s just me

Thousands of women have successful home births every year. Nurse Midwives (I am assuming your midwife is a Nurse Midwife) are VERY qualified to delivery babies. However, please consider what would happen if your baby needed medical attention. How far do you live from the closest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit? How long would it take to get the baby there? For a newborn, the difference between life and death is minutes if they need intensive care. I have taken care of so many babies who were very sick- their parents and physicians had no clue prior to delivery. When I had my first son, I was bleeding out. He and I would have both died had I not been in a hospital. Please keep these things in mind.
Water deliveries are wonderful. Some hospitals will let you do them, as will many birthing centers. If your midwife delivers in a birthing center, that might be a great option for you- care for the baby on site, comfortable environment, etc.
Good luck

Many woman have very safe home births across the globe ….

However, my only problem is … WHAT if something goes wrong w/the baby or you.

I want to be in a hospital. I think its so stupid when people say, “If something does go wrong at least I am close to a hospital.” No, If its life threatening you need to be at the hospital at that moment …

Its not worth it to me or my unborn child.

Watch “The Buisness of Being Born” it helped me a lot. Just make sure you’re not high risk. I did a epidural, induced, hospital bed birth with my first and it was the worst decision of my life. With this one, I’m switching to a midwife at 16ish weeks and I plan on going to the birthing center to have a waterbirth. I’m very confident in my decision, and I wish I would’ve read up more on birth with my first. Good luck on getting a water birth :)

I have a friend that had her first at a birthing center so she could have a water birth. Most hospitals don’t offer that. She had a great experience and there were no complications.

Her second one she pushed out an almost 10 pounder at home! She had a tub where they pumped fresh water in and old water out and was able to have as many people as she wanted in there and the midwife. In her case, she really does well in that environment.

The thing about home birth is that IF and thats a big IF, there were any complications you would have to be take to the hospital. Also you would need to be absolutely sure you weren’t planning on having drugs. Especially with a water birth. The other thing is you have to order your tub to have at home or be attending at a birthing center that does water birth and have plans in place. Its not something that can be decided when you are in labor. There are many plans that need to be made.

Do you want an epidural or are you wanting to go natural no matter what? IF it’s something that you really want you need to discuss it with your midwife now. At 38 weeks you could have her any time.

If you opt not to do the home or water birth it would be good to have birthing plans in place anyway. For instance even at the hospital they may offer a tub to be in while you are laboring. You wouldn’t be able to have your baby in there but it;s nice to help take the edge off. I’m glad I had it this time. Also a birthing ball is nice in the room too. It helps to keep things going, opening the pelvis and also distraction from the contractions.

Just decide what you want and go from there. Check out all your options. Congrats! You’re getting close yay!

Best of luck and blessings :)

There are pros and cons of home birth…

Pros: Natural labor, you can walk around, get in the tub, labor your way and get in any position that makes you feel comfortable during birth…

Cons: If something were to happen EXAMPLE: You hemmorhage after/during birth or the baby goes into distress there is not a doctor present and you are not in a hospital where they can do an emergency c-section or stop your bleeding.

I thought about a homebirth, and before I got pregnant always thought that was what I was going to do, but the risks involved..the “what ifs” scare the heck out of me…I dont even want to risk losing my baby to fetal distress OR losing my life to do unstoppable bleeding….

IF you decide on a homebirth then I would get a birthing pool unless you have a large tub….good luck hun…
