I have had 3 homebirths and will be having my fourth in 2 months. If you are good at relaxing and not fearful about the birth it doesn't have to be too painful. I have always labored in the water but never actually delivered there. The water definitely helps keep things relaxed.
When the birth is over the pain is gone! It is amazing and empowering and I am really looking forward to this labor and delivery.
I am not comfortable with the idea of hospitals unless I am sick and pregnancy is not a problem or a condition so......

On your other question, with my second I was dilated to a 3 for a couple of weeks. I had nothing more than the usual Braxton Hicks type contractions. Then I woke up at 6am definitely in labor and had him within 2 hours. I have a friend who also woke up and thought she had to use the bathroom and really had to push the baby out! A lot of labor can happen without you knowing about it!

It's really a personal preference. I wanted a natural hospital birth. So, it's what I did. I was never pressured to have an epidural, or any IV drugs, so it worked out perfectly for me. I know women who have had home births, and they all loved them. I like the idea of a home birth, but I'm just not comfortable enough with that idea. I also know women who've had both hospital and home water births. They all said that it was fantastic. Again, just not my cup of tea.

Whichever you decide, do your research. Make your wishes known to your SO, doctor or midwife, and anyone else who is going to be there. It will make everything go that much smoother, and you will feel in control. That is a huge part of a happy labor/delivery.

For your side question:

Everyone labors at different lengths. I was in labor for well over a day. When my Mom had me, it was not quite 3 hours from her water breaking to the last push.

I personally would never opt for a home birth, just in-case something went wrong, I would want to have immediate attention for the baby. I had 4 kids, and had an epidural with all of them. However, I did have long labors, and had back labor, and let me tell ya...the drugs did WONDERS for me. I think it's all a personal preference, and whatever you're most comfortable with. And no ones experience is the same...high pain tolerance or not. Giving birth is a whole different ball game.
