I would like to do a water birth at my home. Any advice?
ByHi there. I am going to be a mom soon (I hope) and I have been considering giving birth at home in our tub with a midwife’s help and that of my husband. Naturally if things go wrong I will go to the hospital, I’m a staunch supporter of Western medicine when required heaven knows. I believe, however, that I’d be more comfortable in my own home and with using warm water as a means of pain management. I am also advised that it reduces the risk of needing an episiotomy, which I’d like to avoid if possible.
I was wondering if anyone with a home water birth story would like to share the pros and cons of their experience, or if you gave birth at a medical center giving women the option of doing a water birth on the premises, how that went as well. Especially welcome would be input from moms who have done BOTH a water and a traditional (non water) birth, and how the two compare. Thank you!

If you’re going to attempt a natural birth, make sure you take a really good, in-depth natural birth class, first. I took a hypnobirthing class, and found it very helpful–even though I wasn’t able to do a natural birth, due to complications.
Which leads me to my second thought, keep your options open.
And congratulations!

Speaking from personal experience I say if you want a waterbirth than do it at a birth center. You NEVER know what problems are going to arise. I watched my sister n laws easy at home birth turn into a complete and total nightmare.
I had my first son in a birth center and that was an amazing experience! My son was born completly natural at 4:19pm and we were home in our own bed by 8:30pm
However it is your choise and more power to you.

I have had 2 water births at a hospital. I did not need an episiotomy or tear. It minimized the back labor, I would say that both births were relatively relaxed as far as childbirth goes! I do suggest you do it in medical setting in case something goes wrong.
