Questions about water-birth?
ByI’ve been doing a lot of research on water birth and the different types of ways you can give birth. What are the pros and cons? Anybody have any stories from personal experience? Also I would prefer not to get an epidural. Are there any other ways to give birth naturally besides water birth that you think are good? Also how does water birth pain rate on a scale of 1-10 compared to regular birth?

I had an epidural with my son and I didn’t really like it. It was nice to have the pain relief but I felt disappointed that I couldn’t do it naturally. I did make it to 9cm though
With my daughter I had her naturally. The pain on a scale of 1-10 was a 20. But it goes away right after you have the baby. And it’s nice because you and the baby are so alert.
I found one of the things that helped me the most was doing most of my laboring at home and waiting till I absolutely had to go to the hospital to go.

My friend and old room mate did a water birth for her daughter. She said that it was one of the best, and worst decisions she’s ever made. She’s a pretty tough little bugger, but you could hear her screaming in the waiting room and there were a fair few swear words thrown in there.
She said that the pain was indeed terrible, but the relaxing factor of being in the hot tub the whole time was wonderful. She was actually in so much pain and so exhausted durring her delivery that she would pass out between contractions and her husband had to hold her up so that she wouldn’t drown! BUT she didn’t tear at all becuse her skin was more supple fromthe water.
it really all depends on the individual with this. My doc told me that he in no way condones natural birth. if that’s what the mother opts for then he’ll do it, but he’d rather women just take the drugs. there are other options you can get besides the epidural. there are pain meds, and also cervical blocks that you can get which is what most women (our mothers) used to get before the epidural became main stream.
In all honesty the epidural is more for labor than delivery. My other friend that had an eip said that it helped with the contractions because she couldn’t feel them and had to be told when she was having one. However, by the time labor rolled around she could still feel EVERYTHING! so really it’s up to you.
as for my baby’s birth, i’m just going to go with the flow. i’d rather not have the epi if i don’t have to but if it looks like i’m going to be there for awhile and I’m in a lot of pain then they do advise an epi. otherwise i’m just going to use the pain meds and the cervicle blocks. in the eyes of the dr’s it’s better to have the mother calm and breathing properly than for her to try to be super woman.
if you’re in so much pain, but refuse meds and can’t keep yourself calm enough and breathing consistantly you can starve your baby of oxygen which is so much worse than taking some approved meds, or at least i think so…..
i’ve been doing a lot of research and thinking also….haha!
