well, i’m pregnant with my first baby, so i haven’t given birth yet, but i do know that if you have a water birth they won’t give you any medication for pain, and that would suck!

Well I have never had a natural birth since I’ve had 2 elective c-sections (and I’m very glad I did) Personally, I wouldnt consider water birth…. I’d rather be dry and warm on a bed instead of drenched in water. I’ve also heard that immersing yourself too early can prolong labor. They also wont give you any drugs which is just awful.

Your right the water is the pain reliever. Honestly, I don’t see any cons to it. If your at a birthing center or whatever, you have the option to get in the pool to labor. If at some point you don’t like it, you can get out, get medication, and do whatever. I haven’t had one, and I probably wouldn’t considering my last labor was super fast. But most people I have heard of having one have been totally satisfied. As for putting drops of scented oils in the water.. probably not because they could irritate the baby’s lungs if it breathed in some of the water or the baby’s skin, but I could be wrong. If not you could always bring some scented candles to light, that would be nice.

A water birth is only an option if you have no drugs, that includes pitocin and an epidural. Also check with your doctor because it might not be an option in your hospital or you may only be able to labor in the tub but need to get out to push. It’s excellent for relaxation and pain relief though. I was induced but they turned everything off for a while to see if my body would take over and it did. I was able to use the tub at that point. I had back labor and it didn’t help a bit with the pain of that but I could relax much better between contractions. My husband jumped right in and did counter pressure for the back labor which helped a lot. I had a terribly long labor and had to be put back on pitocin eventually so did get an epidural in the end. I had really hoped for a full water birth which didn’t work out.

When you watch videos of water birth they tend to be a lot less dramatic. It certainly looks better to me.
