Is choking from breastfeeding life-threatening to a baby?
ByMy son is 8 weeks old and he would choke from time to time while breastfeeding, the recent one was really bad it freaked me out. I don’t really feel good about breastfeeding anymore coz I’m scared milk choking might kill my baby. My first child was bottle-fed and never I had a problem with choking but this is my first time to do breastfeeding. What should I do?

Choking is life threatening no matter what the baby is choking on….
Your let down is probably too fast and the baby can’t keep up…. I suggest speaking with a lactation consultant.

Odds are this is the issue: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html
Ride it out, it’ll pass. In the meantime there are plenty of solutions on the link I posted.
There’s no immediate threat from a bit of choking. A good thing to remember is if he’s making noise, then he isn’t actually choking, if he’s not then put him across your knee and give him a good swat between the shoulder blades.

my daughter did it a lot too. i figured that as it was just milk then it was highly unlikely to block her breathing. she stopped doing it as she got bigger and learnt how much she could drink at once. i wouldnt worry too much.

It is probably “over active letdown”. Try laying on your back with baby tummy to tummy while you nurse. That may slow the milk flow.
