It is healthier to breastfeed exclusively, if you can manage to do so. I’m not sure how long you need to take the Fenugreek, hopefully someone else can comment on that.

My lactation specialist told me that you should know if fenugreek is helping between 3 days and a week after you’ve started taking it , and that you should top up with formula only if your baby is still hungry and there is no more milk coming out. Also, with fenugreek, once it has increased your prolactin you can keep it steady by breastfeeding or expressing, so you don’t need to continue with fenugreek

Exclusively breastfeeding will increase your milk supply. Put the baby on the breast and allow him to eat for as often and as long as he wants. You can also try pumping after he is done eating to help increase your supply. Most women state that they notice an increase with the fenugreek within just 1-3 days.

Start by cutting down on the formula by an ounce of two per feeding, so he’ll be nursing more to build up your supply. Start a feeding by nursing on both breasts, twice for each breast, alternating. The you can give him the bottle with less formula. If he’s still hungry, put him back on the breast.
Try pairing the fenugreek with blessed thistle. 9 pills a day each. (3 of both, 3 times a day.) If you think your baby can handle it, add a garlic supplement, because garlic can lead to longer nursing sessions. Or, you can just eat garlic.
Keep taking the fenugreek and blessed thistle until your wee man is completely off the formula.
Hope this helps, good luck!

It’s better for the baby to get only breastmilk.

Whether you can just suddenly stop the formula depends on how much formula he’s currently getting. If he’s only getting one bottle a day, you can just stop it and breastfeed instead.

However, if he’s getting a bit of formula, then you’ll need to pump to increase your supply so that he’ll have enough milk from you alone.

What you do is feed him directly from the breast at every feeding. If after 20 minutes on the breast (10 mins each side) he’s still hungry, then give him formula. While you are feeding the formula, pump for at least 20 minutes and put whatever milk you get in the fridge.

Next feeding, feed from the breast again for at least 20 mins. If he’s still hungry, then feed him whatever breastmilk you have in the fridge. If he’s still hungry after that, then give him formula. Again, pump for at least 20 minutes.

Soon you’ll notice that he’s taking less formula and then eventually none. At that point you can stop pumping and just breastfeed exclusively.
