First, we have the Bradley method. This method was developed by Dr. Robert Bradley in the late 1940’s. This method embraces the idea that childbirth is a natural process and that, with the right preparation, most women can avoid pain medication and routine interventions during labor and birth. From this we can see that this method helps women deliver naturally, with little or no drugs. The program lasts 12 weeks and is more intensive than other childbirth education classes. The course emphasizes excellent nutrition and exercises, promotes relaxation techniques to manage pain, and involves husband or partner as an effective coach. You will also learn how to tune in to your body and which positions will ease labor pains, how to prepare for the stages of labor, how to avoid cesarean sections; how to breastfeed, and how to discuss your birthing plans with your doctor.
Next, we have hypnosis. We know that the mind can be trained to experience discomfort as only pressure. This is what is achieved in childbirth hypnosis. Moreover, when the critical conscious mind is by-passed with hypnosis, the inner mind can literally be reprogrammed to believe that birth will be comfortable, easy, and joyous.
Finally, we have the Alexander technique, which was developed by F.M. Alexander for sitting, standing, and moving with safety, efficiency, and ease after solving his vocal trouble. With the Alexander technique, pain is controlled through breathing and a targeted focus on the reaction to the contractions. In fact, the two main principles of the Alexander technique as they relate to childbirth are the principles of inhibition and direction.
These are just three examples of natural birthing methods that you can do if you want to give birth without the use of medications.

During class, both you and your partner will be taught about deep breathing techniques, massage, concentration and how to have control over your body during labor.
The Bradley Method
In the late 1940’s Dr. Robert Bradley developed this method which helps women to deliver naturally, using little or no drugs. This method emphasizes the importance of excellent nutrition and exercise, relaxation techniques to manage pain and involves partner as an effective coach. In this course, a woman will also know how to tune in to her body and positions which will ease labor pains, as well as, prepare for the stages of labor. Women who had taken this class have also been successful in avoiding cesarean sections.
The Alexander Technique
This technique is all about learning to release muscular tension, increasing breathing capacity and restore the body’s original poise and posture. Upon learning this technique, women will be able to breathe and calm her system, stay focused during the birthing process, help open the cervix during dilation and be prepared for effective pushing as the baby comes.

How to choose which childbirth classes are right for you
Posted by: | CommentsHow to choose which childbirth classes are right for you
The most common options are Bradley, Lamaze or Mongan classes. Since women are pregnant for nine months before giving birth it can be very beneficial to prepare and become familiar with what to expect on the big day. We would like to give a preview of which type of class might be right for you by taking a deeper look into each method.
1. The Bradley method of natural childbirth, which is also called husband-coached childbirth, lasts for twelve weeks. The Bradley method teaches women to be in harmony with their bodies through natural breathing and relaxation. Partners are counted on to help and learn how to become active partaker during the birth. The instruction has information on nutrition and exercise during the pregnancy and breastfeeding. Information also includes any emergency situations such as information on C-sections and all other things that may arise.
2. The Lamaze Method is demonstrated through 12 hours of classes on natural childbirth and the early postpartum period. It was started in Europe and then used U.S. in the late 1950s. This method has now been practiced by many generations of American women. Lamaze is usually thought of as being mostly about breathing through the pain of childbirth; it also contains birth philosophy that strengthens women to give birth naturally and nearly anywhere. Most women start taking the classes during their fifth to sixth month of pregnancy. The information given includes normal labor, birth and early postpartum, labor and birth positioning, comfort and massage routines to ease pain, labor moral, breastfeeding, demonstration about medical procedures, and information on a healthy lifestyle. .
3. The Mongan Method is also known as hypnobirthing. It teaches how to deal with pain for natural childbirth that has been described as daydreaming, or focusing, that happens when you concentrate on a task like when you are engaged in a book or a movie. During the classes women are taught to achieve a state of relaxation while giving birth through self-hypnosis. The idea is that women can stay awake during the birth. A partner is encouraged to also go to the classes to help the mother through hypnosis prompts and visualizations. Although the method allows seventy percent of women who use hypnobirth to not use any medications during labor, the also allows for the use of these techniques with a C-section or pain medications.

Answer by Anna S
My husband and I took the Bradley Method class, it was helpful. I ended up having to have a c-section after almost 18 hours in labor but the methods for labor and relaxation were wonderful. We had a great teacher. I wanted as natural a birth as I could and the Bradley method was great! I would recommend it and if we have another child I will definitely use it again! It came with a book but for the life of me I can’t remember the name, it also came with a workbook as well. Both were very helpful. Try calling a Bradley teacher and asking what book they use and see if they have a recommendation. Good luck.

The moment you became pregnant, you automatically took the first step on a new journey in your life. Although you may feel you’ve done your research by flipping through books and searching the web, a class still has so much more to offer. Taking a class will give you a chance to share experiences and build friendships with other couples. There are a variety of classes to take that will help you deal with pregnancy, labor, and caring for a newborn.
Read about the different types of classes to find out which one is right for you.
Childbirth Classes
Most hospitals and birthing centers offer programs to give expectant parents the 411 on everything from signs of labor to C-section deliveries. These classes are great if this is your first pregnancy. “If you know what to expect, you’ll be less fearful, less anxious, and better prepared to make decisions,” says Sheri Bayles, R.N., a childbirth educator in New York City. This type of class will take you through the labor process, teach you about the different medication options and help you to come up with a birth plan. But remember, no matter what your birth plan is, some factors about labor are out of your control. It’s just best to be fully informed about the labor process and to know all your options.
The Bradley Method
The Bradley Method is a technique that encourages expectant moms to have a natural birth. This is a 12 week course that emphasizes on good nutrition, prenatal exercises, and relaxation. In this class you will be taught how to work with your body to manage the pain. This is a good class to take if you are looking to have a more natural birth. Some couples hire a doula (an experienced non-medical assistant who provides physical and emotional support) to attend their birth. You will still need a doctor or a midwife present. You can find an independent certified instructor at bradleybirth.com.
Lamaze Classes
These classes include information on normal childbirth, deep-breathing exercises, distraction techniques and ways to find comfort. In addition, you will also learn about the medication options and C-sections so you will be ready for whatever comes up. This type of class may be right for you if you’re thinking about a natural birth but you want the medication on hand if needed. To find a class near you go to lamaze.org.
