How can I tell if my baby needs Nutramigen?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by EmHen: How can I tell if my baby needs Nutramigen?
My 6 week old has been on a couple of different formulas now (similac isomil, advance, and sensitive) and has had no improvement with his gas and fussiness. We have kept him on the similac sensitive now for about a week and a half. His doctor says that if you are going to notice a change with the formula, it should only take 4-6 days. He suggested a switch to alimentum or nutramigen if I felt there was a need. He is extremely gassy, he spits up (or should I say vomits) at least 2 times a day, and he cries when he has gas and bowel movements. He does not however have any rashes that would lead me to believe he is allergic to cow’s milk. Should I try a one of these hypoallergenic formulas?
Please- Do not leave an comments like “you should be breastfeeding.” If I could do that, of course I would and answers like these will not relieve the pain that my child is in. If you needed help with your child who was in pain, I would give you the common respect that you deserve.

I would suggest trying the Nestle Goodstart Formula before buying the expensive Nutramigen. This was the only thing that helped my youngest daughter, and now my son. I did bfeed for six mos, but he decided he didn’t want it anymore. I started on Enfamil, and he would just spit up all the time and he was also projectile vomiting even it had been like four hours since his last bottle. I switched him to goodstart and our problems are gone.
My friend uses the Enfamil Gentleease and has no more problems either.

Breast feeding Poop problem for a 4 day old – I am stressed?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by CharlotteWebb: Breast feeding Poop problem for a 4 day old – I am stressed?
I’m having a tough time with getting into the swing of breast feeding. Right now, at 4 days old, I am just starting to produce the first signs of milk
He pooped the first few days of his life, but since 3 days ago, absolutely no poop.
He pees regularly.
He has been checked at the pediatrician yesterday, who was not concerned with the pooping issue. He just said “Just keep breastfeeding”
The public health nurse who specializes in lactation came over today and spent a few hours with me. My technique is good. She did say now that my milk is coming in, I should see my son poop. She said I must stick to a strict Feed Every Two Hours schedule.
My little boy is a bruiser and wants to feed for two hours at a time!
I am finding all this challenging. Has anyone experienced a delay in bowel movements in their newborns? (aside from the regular after birth bowel movement)
THANKS!

Answer by Juliet can sit up!
Breastfed babies can go for days without pooping. You’re doing just fine. Keep doing what you’re doing, although I’d say you don’t have to stick to that schedule. Your son will poop. Breastfed babies use up more of what they’re getting, so they don’t have as much waste to get rid of.

My 10 month old baby has never slept through the night (wakes every 1-2hrs)?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by CARRIBEAN10: My 10 month old baby has never slept through the night (wakes every 1-2hrs)?
I have a beautiful baby boy who I have both breastfed and bottlefed since he was born. He is now down to the “comforting overnight breastfeeding”…goes all day with formula in bottles. In his 10 months, one time he slept 12–5, and that IS IT!!! He hates his crib, and a month ago I resorted to taking him our bed with us, but he still wakes up, just the same as he did in the crib, in the pack and play, graco, city mini etc…He takes a routine morning nap (1-2hrs) from about 9am-10am or a little longer, and sometimes a 2nd afternoon nap (45 mins about). We tried cry it out at 4 months old and he cried 2 hrs straight and it was not for us, and btw he was still awake at the 2 hr mark…We give him his stuffed animal for cuddling, but still he is so restless, and never seems relaxed! What should we do? Oh and we do have a bedtime bath feeding routine and he is tired and falls asleep on me on the boppy pillow every night around 8-830pm sometimes earlier….anything else to suggest? Im looking for a 4-5 hr stretch of sleep for him!!!

Try reading the no cry sleep solution. My daughter was up every 2 hours through the night until she was nearly a year. The no cry sleep solution book gave me some good ideas on how to get her to stop waking up for the breast so often without having to leave her to cry.

I have a gassy gassy baby?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by jessica in humboldt: I have a gassy gassy baby?
So i’m trying to regulate my milk flow by not breastfeeding between 11am and 7pm (going back to work soon). So, my husband and i have been trying new formulas. we tried fussiness and gas kind and it made her supper fussy. The last 2 days we decided to try enfamil premium and my baby is sooo gassy today. I mean non-stop gassy and really stinky too! She also had her first shots on the 11th tho but i doubt that is linked to it. Is it passable that she is reacting badly to formula because its milk based? I know there are soy based but they seem really pricey and i don’t have alot of money. If it is the milk causing it will it go away on its own… soon?
Please don’t reply with “just keep breastfeeding” I’m doing what I can with breastfeeding and have made up my mind on doing half and half for now.

Breastfeeding : How Can the Drop Rate be Improved?

Breastfeeding statistics have recently been made public in the suburb region of Montreal, in Canada. Breastfeeding agencies were very pleased with the overall rate of a whooping 77% nursing rate at birth. The bad news is that the rate of women still breastfeeding their babies after 6 months was a disappointing 3%.
How can this tremendous drop be explained? What can we do to encourage and support breastfeeding after the first months of life? These questions and many more are being considered by organisms promoting breastfeeding.
The first explanation a local medical doctor has proposed is the way the rate of breastfeeding at birth is calculated. The simple question asked to the woman in labor is: do you want to breastfeed your baby? A yes, is then marked and accounted for as a woman breastfeeding her newborn baby.
This doctor says she has seen so many women giving-up on breastfeeding after sometimes only one five minutes try, that the 77% rate is highly inflated by the data collection system. Most women who stop nursing their babies will do so in the first week after birth. A repeat follow-up call would show a drastic drop in the overall breastfeeding rate after the first week.
How can we explain that so many women give-up on breastfeeding after only one week of trying?
The first answer may be that we need a better support fro breastfeeding mothers and more clinics where mothers can be re-assured and supported in their effort to breastfeed. Another very important step would be to have tangible supports for women who are nursing. Education of partners on how they can relieve their nursing wife would be greatly helpful.
Another answer forwarded by the family doctor who has delivered over 2500 babies in her career is that some women will answer that they want to breastfeed from the pressure applied by society. It is now “in fashion” to breastfeed and a new mother might fear to be judged if she does not breastfeed her baby. She then nurses but is tempted to give-up at the slightest set back.
“I have seen women giving-up on breastfeeding after a five minute tryout” says the doctor. “To me, it seamed clear that this mother felt more like she had to breastfeed her baby more than she wanted”, she concludes.
In answer to the question of how we can improve the drop rate of breastfeeding, the answers are multiple. Strong supporting groups and a loving spouse are the two most important factors. Making private areas readily available for nursing mothers are a must. Proper data collection is also needed to get a more realistic picture of the breastfeeding rate in North America.
A one week follow-up call or better yet visit is mandatory to get the more accurate rate of mothers who are still breastfeeding and helping the ones who need support.
“A stronger belief of the virtues of breast milk is also a must” continues this doctor who does medical mission in third world countries. “In such countries like Honduras and Bolivia where most citizens are poor, breastfeeding rates are above 95% until the baby is well over one year old. They have no other option than breastfeed and they strongly believe breast milk is the best food for their growing babies…and they are right!” concludes Dr Fiset with a smile.

What are the effects of Doxycycline during pregnancy?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Super Mama: What are the effects of Doxycycline during pregnancy?
I was prescribed Doxycycline today for a pelvic infection. I got the meds and in bright yellow it says “DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, SUSPECT YOU ARE PREGNANT, OR WHILE BREASTFEEDING.”
My Fiance and have been trying to have a baby, and there is a big possiblity I’m pregnant. Took an early pregnancy test this morning, and it was negative, but my period is not due until this weekend. I obviously need to take the meds to get rid of infection.. for 10 days straight…
I am wondering what kind of effects could this med have on preggo mamas?

Answer by Princess Cherbs
Im not sure what the specifics are. Check it out on the internet. However, there are many meds that are safe for use during pregnancy such as amoxicillian. It would be best just to get a different rx for those.

Medication for a UTI during pregnancy????
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by beachcutie03: Medication for a UTI during pregnancy????
I’m just over 13 weeks pregnant and I have UTI so today I went to see my general prac. Dr. since my regular OB was out of the office. She gave me a medication very well knowing I’m pregnant and just entering the 2nd trimester. I went and picked up the prescription and on the bottle it says “do not take if you are pregnant or suspect you are pregnant or are breastfeeding.” So I calledt he pharmacy and they said that I should take it if my Dr. prescribed it to me but not many studies have been done that prove it does not harm the fetus. What should I do? I do not want to harm my baby but I NEED relief from this UTI! Tomorrow is Saturday so my Dr. isn’t in the office and I cannot wait until Monday. Should I just take it and trust my Dr.? HELP!!!
I’m allergic to penicillin.
It’s the generic to Bactrim
Best answer:
Answer by annas_baby_sis
No. Go to a walk=in clinic or an after hours clinic. Try and get penicillin if you’re not allergic. Until then, chug down cranberry juice (not the cocktail, there’s too much sugar), chug down water, and go to a health food store and get cranberry pills. That will help loosen the bacteria from your urinary tract and will begin to give you some relief.
Good luck.
ETA: Since you’re allergic, try the craberry pills and juice and water. It really does work without risking any medication crossing the placenta. Like I said, it loosens the bacteria from your urinary tract, helping flush out the infection.

Is it common for nursing moms to get recurrent UTIs?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Qatie: Is it common for nursing moms to get recurrent UTIs?
I just finished the antibiotics for the third urinary tract infection I’ve had in the last four months. They started when my baby was about 8 months old. I never, ever had a UTI before, not even when I was pregnant. For the first or second infection, my doctor made an offhand comment like “Well, you ARE breastfeeding” as if that was an explanation for the UTI, but I didn’t get the chance to ask her about it.
So, has this happened to any women out there? Does breastfeeding and/or postpartum changes in the perineal region really make women more susceptible to UTIs? If so, why?
The real reason I’m asking is because I’m starting to suspect that it is the spermacide I started using about a month or so before the first UTI. But I would much rather have my breastfeeding be the cause since the spermacide was the only temporary method left for birth control for my husband and me besides a non-hormonal IUD (which isn’t available from my doctors) or natural family planning (aka the rhythm method) which concerns me as a reliable method. So does anyone have any experience or advice that would support breastfeeding as the cause, or do we pretty much have to have all our kids back-to-back and then get a vasectomy?
Jennifer – not a bad answer, except for a couple of things:
UTIs are not contagious – they are caused by normal bacteria from elsewhere in the body getting into the urinary tract. It can be bacteria from the skin or vagina, but usually it’s fecal bacteria (I’ve had Klebsiella pneumoniae twice and E. coli once). So it’s not possible this is coming from my husband.
UTIs happen because perineal irritation lets the bacteria enter the urethra (inflamed skin can’t keep bacteria out as well), abnormal perineal conformation makes an easier pathway into the vagina (such as women who have perineal fistulas from birth trauma), too much bacteria overwhelms the natural defenses (such as wiping back to front), or hormonal diseases dilute the urine and make it more hospitible for bacteria (like in Cushings disease or diabetes).
What it didn’t know was whether breastfeeding hormones changed the urine substantially, or if there could perineal change from a normal birth.
As for “rhythm” versus “natural family planning” many people DO use the terms synonymously, though I agree that family planning experts are trying to phase out the term “rhythm method” in favor of the more scientific-sounding NFP.
http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=9773
But whether it is called the rhythm method, periodic abstinance or natural family planning, it is still based upon the idea that you don’t have intercourse when you think you are fertile. You could be lazy and or foolish and try to guess when you are fertile by counting days on a calendar, or you could be informed and use more accurate methods like basal temp and cervical mucus, but it’s still the same basic principle at work. It’s silly to give them different names. If the calendar method has one name, and using BBT and CM has another, why not give a third name for just using BBT alone, a fourth to those only checking CM?
Best answer:
Answer by Larkin L
Sorry I’ve never heard of breastfeeding causing a UTI. Call and ask the doctor to explain. Could be sex is pushing the spermicide up inside your urethra and causing the infection.
