One of my life’s biggest crossroads?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by lalaland2405: One of my life’s biggest crossroads?
I am going to school for stenography (courtroom reporter). I’ve been going for a year and a 1/2 and have 20 thousand dollars in loans. It is 100 percent job placement when I graduate, and easily a six-figure job.
But graduating is difficult. There is a 90 percent drop-out rate. There is no definite time when I will graduate. It could be 9 months, it could be 3 years.
The other day when watching Birthday on Discovery Health, I was thinking to myself, “I would love to do that,” to be a midwife, “maybe one day.” And then I thought, why one day? Why not now? I have always been a girl who loves babies. I’m a nanny. I always watch those birthday shows because I think pregnancy and birth is so magical and special. So, I am considering switching schools to be a midwife.
Their schooling is 2 years long. They make around 80 thousand a year. The job prospects are high. I feel deep down in my heart this is something I would really love.
Do I switch?
Also, my boyfriend and I are waiting to get done school. He’s 6 years older than me and ready but he’s waiting for me to be done first. He said he’d be dissappointed if I switched. That it was immature and a rash decision. Also, he is upset it could take me longer and my original loans would be a waste.
Do I switch? Do I stay? Do I wait a few years and go back for midwifery, something I’d really love after my kids are old enough to go to school and use my stenography in the meantime so the past year and a half and 20 thousand dollars aren’t a complete waste? Did you deal with this when you were young and in college? What did you decide? Do you regret it?

Answer by retiredesol
You have a very difficult decision to make. I wish I could just push a button and come up the answers.
But I do have a few questions: 1) How old are you? and How long have you been at this program
2) Why do only 10% of students pass? Is this the percentage in your school or all over the country? And where do you stand in the percentage? Would you be better off transfering to a school with a higher pass percentage
3) Are you serious about your boyfriend and why is he waiting for YOU to finish first (does he want you to work so he can continue school, for example)? Does he have a great influence over you and are you willing to listen to him regardless of your own feelings? And if you do, will you regret it later?
4) What do you feel about being a courtroom reporter? Is it exciting to you? Was it exciting before you saw this “Birthday” on Discovery Channel?
5) How long have you had these ideas about being a midwife? Is it just recently since the TV show?
7) If you were assured of getting your diploma/certificate in a reasonable amount of time, would you be concerned about changing your coursework at this stage?
8)What in your heart of hearts do you really want to do? REALLY, not “the grass is greener”, such fun, I love kids attitude. But REALLY?
Now consider this: Becoming a midwife is extremely hard work; You have two years of HARD. HARD studying. Forget going out with your boyfriend: you’ll be home studying. And not everyone passes that course either. You could get part of the way and not make it. And liking children is irrelevent. You are not a nanny; You are doing hard work assisting a woman to bring a child into the world. You see the baby for a few minutes and then someone else takes it.
Gives this some real thought. It is a life-changing decision!!!!

Do Dopplers use non-ionizing radition?? confused…?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Bella: Do Dopplers use non-ionizing radition?? confused…?
OKay so I watched Youtube vids and someone commented this :
“Does this pregnant woman know that the “midwife” is exposing her to 30 times more non-ionizing radiation than an imaging ultrasound with that doppler. In a healthy, normal woman, it is very easy to hear the heartbeat clearly with a fetoscope that does not involve any ultrasound. Midwives have a long tradition of low-tech, high touch care. I hope all Vancouver midwives aren’t using dopplers for prenatal assessments. ”
Second if they do, what is non-ionizing radtion and is it even bad or is this person who commented off their block??
I’ve never heard of this. The only reason this caught my attention is cause I’m using a midwife (16 weeks along)
Best answer:
Answer by corlz23
Not sure if each country is different, but our ultrasound machines and dopplers dont use ionizing radiation. I have a home doppler havent had a midwife use one yet. It does not use ionizing radiation and the home dopplers use way less ultrasound waves than an ultrasound imagery machine.

can men be midwives??? im sure they can, but have you ever seen a male midwife?? are they still called that if they are men, or do they have a different name?? lol, im bored and was just thinking
“hmm, ive never seen or heard of a male midwife”

Answer by due 01/25/10
I have never seen a male midwife.. I went to a huge practice with my last pregnancy, 36 midwives, all were female. There were males, but the males were all actual doctors. The practice I go to now is 2 male doctors and 2 female RN’s.
What do you think? Answer below!
Question by Ember Halo: male doulas: what do you think of them, & the obstacles they face to become a doula? would you hire one?
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080108.wldoula08/BNStory/lifeFamily/home
would you “question whether aspiring male doulas are “sickos who get off on [childbirth],”"
or do you feel “A doula needn’t be a woman or have personal experience giving birth….. “It takes having a warm heart, a passion for helping pregnant and postpartum women and the training [to make] you a good doula.”"
if you were pregnant, would you hire a male doula? why or why not?
what do you think of the obstacles that men have to overcome in order to become a doula?
for those of you unfamiliar with the term “doula”:
A doula is an experienced, non-medical assistant who provides physical, emotional and informed choice support in prenatal care, during childbirth and during the postpartum period.
btw, my husband actually trained to be my childbirth coach (basically the same role a doula would have), so i won’t be hiring a doula myself… & i think he’ll do great
but a husband being in that role is different
i admit, i’d never even thought of a man being a doula before i stumbled across this article…but i was curious what others thought about male doulas…
it seems unfair that they face so many stereotypes & are discouraged from the field, imo…
some doulas don’t charge for their services (one man in the article does not)

Edit: Kidding, but I would actually do it for my wife, if people actually still got married and had children in a marriage.

Is there a very different attitude to birth in the USA than here in the UK?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by LadyMoon (Baby Charlotte arrived 16/09/10!!): Is there a very different attitude to birth in the USA than here in the UK?
I’ve just been wondering this whilst reading questions on here.
In the UK, despite the fact that many women do choose to have their babies in hospital with an epidural etc, a great number of women prefer to choose home birth or birth in a midwife-led birth centre. I had my son in a midwife-led unit – indeed the idea of the highly-medicalised hospital environment was off-putting and a bit scary to me – I would only have gone down that route had there been any problems or complications! Waterbirths, home births and Birth Centres are extremely popular birth choices here (for those with problem-free pregnancies and uncomplicated deliveries of course) . . .
It seems to me (although I might be interpreting this wrongly) that in America, childbirth is seen as a very dangerous, “medical procedure”, whilst in the UK, and indeed most other European countries its seen as a more nature process . . .
Also what is the status of “midwives” in America? In the UK these are very highly trained medical professionals who’ve completed a 4-year midwifery degree through the Royal College of Midwives and are qualified to do pretty much *everything* when it comes to delivery (other than performing surgery or setting up epidurals etc). They handle the vast majority of deliveries in the UK, even in hospitals – obstetricians usually getting involved only for “problematic”/complicated cases. You can even get Consultant Midwives who are just as qualified as doctors – if not more so in some cases (my consultant midwife is amazing and so knowledgeable and helpful)
It seems that in America, however, they are seen as little more than quacks and people seem very disparaging about them, saying they are “unqualified” etc – I’m taking it that the whole system of becoming a midwife in the USA is different?

Answer by Precious
I’m in America (in California). I chose to have my kids at the hospital with my wonderful OB/GYN. I have friends who have used midwives here for a more natural approach. I chose to have epidurals with both of my kids and also chose to be induced with my second (really long story, but very glad I made the choice to be induced), I was glad to have medical care available in case I really needed it. Home births are becoming more popular here but I had an awesome hospital with awesome staff. Midwives here can’t do all that much and usually have to consult with an OB before making any serious decisions. I really don’t know all the details unfortunately. I do kind of view birthing centers and midwives for those “all-natural” (maybe eve hippie-type) people. I want the best technology available and I got it.

I need advice. Would you be offended if….?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by 333: I need advice. Would you be offended if….?
I’m very light skinned (bosnian). My husbands family are all tanned with olive complexions (lebanese). My MIL was with me while I was giving birth and one of the first things out of her mouth when my son was first born was (to the midwife) “is he going to be as white as her?”
She also made comments before I gave birth that my sister in law said she hopes our son is tanned like his dad and has my eyes.
My sister in law has made comments too. She bought her friend over to see our son and asked her “do you think he’s going to be a whitey?” (her exact words) then proceeded to tell me how she’s only asking because “i’m very white and my husbands skintone is ALRIGHT” (her exact words again). A few minutes later she went on to say how he’s looking more and more like my husband. Then faced my son and said “you’re becoming more and more better looking everytime I see you!” (everyone including her was saying how much he looked like me when I first gave birth).
These are just a few remarks. There have been many more.
Am I reading too much into this? I feel like I want to say something back to them next time they make these sort of comments but don’t know what. It seems silly when I read my question over but it really bothers me.
What should I say?
Best answer:
Answer by RAWR
IDK, I’m really light skinned and people always make fun of me. It seems like they think you are ugly or something, I personally would say something back, even bring it up to your husband, its uncalled for. They are making childish remarks, it would make me upset.

Question by Chrissye: Is there any websites that offer online “doula ” courses that is not too pricey here in south carolina?
Best answer:
Answer by Lulu
Because of the Doula’s role in the perinatal and postpartum period of childbirth, I don’t think you could get much of the course online. It would be similar to trying to get trained as a midwife or lactation consultant online. You could do some of the anatomy/physio type of things, but you would need to attend several births, be it home, hospital, or birthing center, to get actual experience and have “teacher review” for your participation in the birth. Call your local birthing center, midwife, or progressive hospital to inquire if they have classes.

What is a Birth Doula? www.serenitybirth.com

I had never seen myself “in Action” at a birth! Here is a preview of what doulas do to support a couple during childbirth. A doula provides Emotional, Physical, and Informational support to a couple during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period. A doula does NOT interfere with the work of medical staff and she does not make medical decisions for you. Footage from this video was taken over 2 days of coninuous labor support and resulted in the Natural Birth of a 10 pound baby! Question about Water-births?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Tk: Question about Water-births?
I have been trying to find a hospital that supports waterbirths in my area. I’m already seeing an OBGYN at the hospital that I’m registered to deliver at. But I really want to do a water birth.
So I called a hospital that is only 15 minutes up the road & asked them if they supported water births. The lady said “That would be up to the provider” , so I said “ok, I could have a water birth there?” She kind of laughed at me and said “that would be up to the provider” –I dont know what she means by this, so I asked. She sort of laughed again & said ” it would be up to your obgyn or midwife.”
Does that make since to you? I just want to know if it would be possible to have my child by water birth at their hospital. Am I missing something here?
Best answer:
Answer by Stormy
She means that if you doctor that delivers you is ok with doing a water birth you can have one. So the hospital is ok with doing it, you just have to find a doctor that delivers at that hospital, and that doesn’t mind a water birth.

The Moon’s Effect on Natural Childbirth

The Moon’s Effect on Natural Childbirth
]]>
Did you know that some maternity units actually have more staff
available during periods of full moon?
I’ve always been fascinated by the moon’s effect on nature, so
when a friend’s wife conveyed to me what her midwife had told
her during the birth of their daughter, I decided to find out
more about childbirth, full moon and a possible link.
On speaking to various medical staff involved in natural
childbirth, the first thing I learned was that expectant mothers
often experience false signs of labor during full moon.
Contractions known as “Braxton Hicks” — sometimes noticeable to
the mother and sometimes not — become more pronounced and many
travel to the maternity unit in the belief that “it’s time”.
Disappointed — or perhaps relieved — they return home, the
pains having subsided and with no dilation of the cervix.
While these expectant mothers visiting the clinic with their
mistaken signs of labor are part of the reason why extra staff
are needed, the major difference is found in the number of women
whose amniotic sac — the water — breaks.
Just as some women experience false labor pains, in cases where
the water breaking marks the start of childbirth, full moon is
the time when it’s most likely to happen.
In order to discover for myself whether this could be true, I
asked several female friends how their births had started. Those
who responded with “the water breaking” were then asked the date
of the birth. On checking this against a moon phase chart, I
discovered that almost all had given birth on, or very close to,
a full moon.
The theory is that the moon’s gravitational pull effects the
amniotic fluid in much the same way as it effects the water in
the sea, rivers and even the water that’s otherwise found in our
bodies.
As a woman’s body prepares for natural childbirth, the amniotic
sac becomes distended so the point where it will easily burst if
put under pressure. Under normal circumstances, the pressure of
labor contractions bursts the sac. During a full moon, the
pressure caused by the moon’s effect on the water inside the sac
can cause the same things to happen, but without the
accompanying contractions.
When this happens, natural childbirth doesn’t always move
forward and with no other signs of labor present, the
obstetrician may decide to induce the birth. During my own study
of this phenomenon I found that of 8 women whose births started
with the water breaking at full moon, 5 of them had no
accompanying contractions.
A coincidence? Perhaps. But surely midwives wouldn’t prepare
themselves for an increase in natural childbirth activity if
there wasn’t some truth in this?
One midwife told me that when it comes to planning childbirth,
full moons should always be looked for around the time of the
expected delivery. If there’s one within a few days either side,
the chances are your baby will be born on that day
