Good Websites for Fetus Pictures?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Guuuurrrlllll: Good Websites for Fetus Pictures?
Why is it when I Googled “fetus” for a project about the womb and pregnancy, the same pictures always come up? They always show some fake nasty abortion pictures that are not acceptable because they are not real. I need to do a medical project on development during pregnancy and I don’t want some fake pictures of a bloody fetus with finger grasping for something. It’s stupid to be honest. And I was also scared when some of the more detailed “in the womb” pictures come from strange sources like “pro-life alliance.” Does anyone know a good website for legit pictures of children in the womb? Thanks

Homosexuality & Genetics?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by eSkye: Homosexuality & Genetics?
I’m asking this as an out lesbian.
I am currently taking AP Psychology and am reading the section about sexuality and genetics. I’m finding it incredibly interesting. Here are my findings:
There are many animals that are naturally homosexual. There has been studies that show you can make a rat homosexual by injecting it with certain hormones, as well as fruit flies. Dolphins, goats, fruit bats, penguins, and orcas are all animals that commonly exhibit homosexual tendencies,
As well as that, studies of humans show that homosexuality lies in the structure of your brain. Straight men have larger hypothalimic brain clusters than women and gay men. Scientist Simon LeVay comments on this finding with “Gay men simple don’t have the brain cells to be attracted to women.” The Anterior Commisure is also larger in gay men than straight men.
These brain differences are accompanied by genetic differences. There are correlations between the differences of spatial abilities, fingerprint ridge counts, auditory system development, handedness, occupational preferences, relative finger lengths, gender noncomformity, age of onset of puberty, male body size, and sleep length and of sexual orientation.
The scientist Glenn Wilsion said “Modern scientific research indicates that sexual orientation is partly determined by genetics, but more specifically by hormonal activity in the womb.”
Studies indicate that male homosexuality is more likely to be transmitted from the mother’s side of the family.
So, homosexuality is not unnatural by any means. It is proven to be just another genetic difference, such as hair or eye color.
I think these things should be more widely known. Just saying “Love is love” is no solid evidence to an ant-gay. At least, to me it isn’t. I don’t feel that I need to justify my sexuality, but I do like to know that there really is something natural and unchangable about it.
What do people think of this? Do you find that it interferes with the idea that “Love is love, no matter what”? Do people find it sickening that we have to back up our “ways” with scientific evidence?
There is no “gay” gene that has yet been identified, so no, it cannot be turned on and off.
Also, since the orientation is correlated (I do NOT mean caused or causing) with cognitive differences and even bodily differences, there is no way you can just “turn it off” or “recover from it”. You can’t change your fingerprint. Fingerprint differentiations are correlated with sexuality. You can’t get rid of it,

Fetuses Found to Have Memories – Have you seen this?

Fetuses Found to Have Memories
By Jennifer Harper | Thursday, July 16, 2009
They weigh less than 3 pounds, usually, and are perhaps 15 inches long. But they can remember.
The unborn have memories, according to medical researchers who used sound and vibration stimulation, combined with sonography, to reveal that the human fetus displays short-term memory from at least 30 weeks gestation – or about two months before they are born.
“In addition, results indicated that 34-week-old fetuses are able to store information and retrieve it four weeks later,” said the research, which was released Wednesday.
Scientists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Maastricht University Medical Centre and the University Medical Centre St. Radboud, both in the Netherlands, based their findings on a study of 100 healthy pregnant women and their fetuses with the help of some gentle but precise sensory stimulation.
On five occasions during the last eight weeks of their pregnancies, the women received a series of one-second buzzes on their bellies with a “fetal vibroacoustic stimulator,” a hand-held diagnostic device used to gauge an unborn baby’s heart rate and general well-being.
The baby’s responses – primarily eye, mouth and body movements – were closely monitored over the weeks with ultrasound imaging to gauge “fetal learning” patterns. The researchers found that the babies acclimated themselves to the sounds and vibrations to the point that they no longer bothered to respond – a process known as “habituation.”
“The stimulus is then accepted as ’safe’ ” by the babies, the study said.
The team also found that the tiny test subjects actually improved these skills as they grew older, with those who were 34- or 36-weeks old clearly showing that they had become familiar with the hum outside the womb.
“The fetus ‘remembers’ the stimulus and the number of stimuli needed for the fetus to habituate is then much smaller,” the study said.
“It seems like every day we find out marvelous new things about the development of unborn children. We hope that this latest information helps people realize more clearly that the unborn are members of the human family with amazing capabilities and capacities like these built in from the moment of conception,” said Randall K. O’Bannon, director of education and research for the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund.
A call to NARAL Pro-Choice America for comment on the implications of the research were not returned.
The Dutch medical team, meanwhile, said its findings could help obstetricians track the healthy development of unborn babies during pregnancy. The research was published in Child Development, a medical journal.
Scientists have been curious about fetal responses to sound for decades.
The first real study of “habituation” occurred in 1925 when researchers discovered that fetuses moved less when exposed to a beeping car horn. Since then, door buzzers and even electric toothbrushes have been used to help researchers understand the fetal environment – and the response of the unborn to such influences.
Beeps and buzzes were not always the tools of choice.
In 2003, psychologists and obstetricians at Queen’s University in Canada found a profound mother-baby link. In a study of 60 pregnant women, they found that the unborn babies preferred the voices of their own mothers – both before and after birth.
The heart rates of fetuses sped up when they heard their mother reading a poem, and slowed down when they heard a stranger’s voice – evidence of “sustained attention, memory and learning by the fetus,” said Barbara Kisilevsky, a professor of nursing who led the research.
The Queen’s group has also investigated fetal response to the father’s voice, concluding that if men try a little pre-natal vocalizing to their offspring, the newborn will later recognize the father’s voice.

I see.
Few comments, firstly, to the guy below me, maybe after 30 weeks it would be inhumane, but the legal limit in the UK is 24 weeks, beyond which the fetus, if removed, can be kept alive using machines. I expect the legal limit in the US is similar (although, being a British Citizen i am not entirely sure).
Also, “We hope that this latest information helps people realize more clearly that the unborn are members of the human family”… What does this mean? That we should pay for them to get on buses and trains & for them to have cinema tickets?
“with amazing capabilities and capacities like these built in from the moment of conception” Isn’t there a slight different between “moment of conception” and “30 weeks gestation”? Yes, there is. 30 Weeks to be precise.

Feminists, do you support Unborn Victims of Violence Act?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Jonus: Feminists, do you support Unborn Victims of Violence Act?
which basically states:
The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 is a United States law which recognizes a “child in utero” as a legal victim, if he or she is injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence. The law defines “child in utero” as “a member of the species Homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb”.
Ahhhh dear Fiona even the infamous NOW is against this one, because even they admit they would be hypocrites by supporting this act and still be pro-choice.

Helena, are you pro-choice as well, suppose not.
How can anyone be pro-choice and support this act is beyond me.

The Supreme court can overrule it’s own ruling.

No.
There is a point where the concerns of the child outweigh those of the mother. But it has to be a child first.

Abortion and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act…?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by USSoldierL: Abortion and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act…?
How is it that abortion is legal in this country, but at the same time we have the Unborn Victims of Violence Act? The law defines “child in utero” as “a member of the species Homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb”.
Why is it that a uterus is only considered human if it was the victim of a “violent act”, but not if the mother doesnt want it?
Somebody explain this to me.
What makes life begin at birth? Simply being outside of the womb? The existance of fuctional body parts? THAT is where life begins? So its not that the baby already has blood flowing through its body, a beating heart, and growing body parts…its the fact that it has all of that but now its outside. I just dont understand that logic.
If somebody is charged with killing a mother and her unborn child, that in itself acknowledges that it is life. But it suddenly is NOT life when we are talking about abortions, just another body part? I’ve never heard of somebody being sent to prison for killing a body part.

Do pro-choicers agree or disagree with this law?

Unborn Victims of Violence Act – 2004
The law states that any “child in utero” is considered to be a legal victim if injured or killed during the commission of a federal crime of violence. The bills definition of “child in utero” is “a member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb.”
And if you agree, what is your opinion of when life starts (what stage)? Although many states now have fetal homicide laws, there are a wide variety of differences about when a fetus is considered living. In 18 states, the laws recognize a fetus as living at the time of conception.
