They would say that the child is trying to manipulate you. What a loud of crock. A child that young needs the parent to go to them and sooth them.. if they haven't composed themselves after 10-15 pick them up hold them, sing to them, keep them in their crib and massage back or something. It is good for their physiological development for their parent to soothe them. Baby could be scared, needing more attention, feeling uncomfortable, teething.. and some things can't be self soothed..I have never left my child past 20-30 minutes, one because it hurt me to think my child needing me and me not tending to her and plus crying is annoying especially when it is not subsiding. . I may get thumbs down for my answer from the self soothing parents out there but w/e it worked for me, my toddler can self soothe herself fine now. I let my youngest cry it out when he was 4 1/2 months. But he never cried more than 20 minutes. And even now, he is 12 months, I never let him go more than 30 minutes. I know that if he cries more than that, there is something he needs before he will go to sleep. Usually it's something simple, like he dropped his little elmo blanket, or he needs another kiss. But then after that he will go right to sleep. Obviously after 2 hours, there may be something wrong. I would say you may have to try again tomorrow with getting him to self soothe. It is important not to give in though, because then they will just figure they have to cry longer before you come in. So either, after 2 hours there is something wrong keeping him awake, or you have tried this before and gave in? AND when I say not to give in, I mean after like just 10 minutes. Most babies can fall asleep on their own if you give them a chance. And I have to say it is absolutely ridiculous to say a 6 month old cant cry for more than 5 minutes...
