How can I get money when I’m off after my child is born when my employer does not offer maternity leave?

By pregnantnews

I work at McDonald’s and they do not offer paid maternity leave. I was wondering how I can get money for the time I am unable to work after the birth of my child. I live in Pennsylvania and I have not been able to find any information on this.

Save up some money every week right now. When the baby is born use your savings to last the 6 weeks.

See if your state offers maternity leave of some sort.

In California, (even though pregnancy is NOT a disability, I know, I know) women can apply and get disability checks from the state for pregnancy leave. See if Penn offers a program like that. Your doctor would know.

you can get temporary family assistance. You would have to contact family services. However, this isn’t much. i think like 250 per MONTH. You can also get food stamps so you don’t have to worry about getting food… Other than that I don’t know. I hope you are saving or have another plan!

If you have worked full time for the last year at your job you are entitled by federal law a paid maternity leave for 6 weeks for a vaginal birth and 8 weeks for c section. It is called Family Medical Leave Act. You will need to provide documentation and have papers signed by your doc assisting with delivery to collect this.

Start saving now! Also contact the local welfare and ask them, you should also look into unemployment, wic and whatever else your state offers.

The lack of universal paid maternity leave in the US and Australia really annoys me. Curently there have been submissions to our government on this issue, it effects baby and maternal health and many other things. McDonald’s should be ashamed of themselves, without children they wouldn’t have any customers. Are you able to run at home daycare or have any talents or hobbies. Or call centre work at night if you have a partner to share the childcare load. But also get mad and start lobbying for change. If they have it in Europe etc why not give women/men a little time to raise their families. What are 1 or 2 years out of a 50 year working life?
