How serious is this BPA baby bottle thing? And what do you plan to do?

By pregnantnews

I have been hearing a lot about BPA and baby bottles. My son uses Playtex Ventaire bottles, and I’m not sure if I should switch him or just let him use them. My questions are: How serious is this issue? What other bottles are safe and BPA-free? and What do you plan on doing if you have a child using one of the bottles identified?

I breastfeed 99% of the time. the other times my daughter uses avent bottles. I have no intention of changing. The media likes to blow things out of proportion.

Im going through the same thing right now! I have ventaire as well.. I’m still using it right now.. but i went out and bought a soothie pack kit and i read they are bad as well i just got off the phone with the company(thefirstyears) and they said that BPA IS in the bottles, but to go to the FDA.com and look for info.. Then i called my Pediatrician and they told me to go to http://WWW.CDC.GOV and that they have all recalls ever for babies.. its a tad confusing but there is a recall page on their.// I guess i’m going to go get some glass bottles? I really don’t want to b/c im scared they will break.. I think the BPA thing is very small and its if you heat it up.. But on the other hand i don’t want to take chances -Good luck hope i helped!

Of all the things I have heard about BPA I have not ONCE heard what the affects could be. The way I see it is that pretty much everyone has used bottles with BPA in them, and I have yet to see any adverse affects from it. And the fact that it’s “toxic” hasn’t been discovered until now, makes me wonder how serious it really could be.

It’s serious. Serious enough for the Canadian government to label it a toxin, put in place a plan for a full ban in the fall, and serious enough for stores here to pull all BPA items off their shelves…including biggies like Wal-Mart.

Ventaire contains BPA. Throw those bottles out and get new ones. Playtex Drop Ins are BPA free, as are Gerber Clear View and Gerber Gentleflow.

Take this seriously.

Do you really want to risk your son’s health?

BPA mimics estrogen in the human body. It can lead to testicular cancer later in life, early onset of puberty…all sorts of bad things.

Don’t take the chance.

Addition – here’s a link where you can click on the various baby item company names to see who’s got what. http://zrecs.blogspot.com/2008/02/z-report-on-bpa-in-infant-care-products.html Scroll down to ‘company ratings’ and see where they are from there.

I dont think anyone really knows yet if its really that dangerous. I think human studies are ongoing. My baby is still on Avent and Dr. Brown and I won’t change them unless an official warning comes out.

BornFree and MaM bottles are BPA free, also all of the glass bottles.

But you know, who knows what other studies they will come out with in the future….

Oh and to the user that said drop ins are safe – they have another kind of chemical that they are concern over now –

“The so called clear, hard plastic bottles, this is a material known as polycarbonate, tends to have BPA in it, some amount of Bisphenol-A in it. Whereas the plastic bottles or the plastic liners may have phthalates in them rather than Bisphenol-A. ” (from Boston Children’s Hospital website discussion on this)

Switch to Playex Drop In’s. They are BPA free. It’s very serious! Even tiny amounts of bpa could be dangerous. I live in Canada and Zellers is doing a voluntary recall of Avent bottles among other bottles with BPA in them. I just returned a whole bunch of Avent bottles that I stopped using months ago when I first heard of BPA. I got a $200.00 store credit and me and the baby did lots of shopping :)

Here is a link to read about the dangers of BPA:

I would not recommend glass bottles as a shard of glass could come loose and harm the baby.

No one knows how serious this could be. I used the vent air bottles too, and switched to plastic (as soon as they arrive). The drug admin is saying that the levels of this chemical are not high enough to do any damage. The concern here is time. Us adults have been exposed to so much plastic over our whole lives. Do you remember the glass coke bottles? It’s been that long and plastic is everywhere. Anything plastic with food in it can get contaninated when the plastic changes temperatures. Juice bottles, baby bottles, applesauce containers, even yogart, everything. So the more we eat the more exposure we get. Cervical cancer is a serios issue for women. I am switching and think everyone should.
