What’s all this about BPA? What is it and why is everyone worried about it in sippys and bottles?
ByApparently I’m out of touch, I have no idea what this is or why it’s bad. Could someone inform me? Thanks!

It’s a chemical used in some plastics. It’s in Avent, and Playtex baby bottles, and sippy cups. It is in many more brands and Items, but these are the ones that I am aware of. It is in sippy cups as well. When it is heated the chemical leaches into the liquid inside. They are being banned in Canada.

It is very bad. The Canadian government has announced that it plans to classify it as a toxic substance, and will likely ban it by the fall.
It leaches in to the liquid/substance in the bottle/sippy/whatever you’re using, and it mimics estrogen, which can cause a lot of problems long term. It has been shown to be very worrisome in lab rats.
In some cases the leaching is worse with heating – in others, it leaches whether heated or not.
When I first heard about it last year, I kind of brushed it off, thinking that there are so many things that are bad for you these days, what’s the difference – but more and more problems are showing up in the testing of polycarbonate plastics (including BPA).
Where do you find BPA? It’s found in plastics that are #7 recyclables (the #7 on the bottom of the product in the recycle symbol triangle).
You can find out which kids/baby products have BPA and which don’t in this index…it doesn’t cover everything, but it’s a good start. http://zrecs.blogspot.com/2008/02/z-report-on-bpa-in-infant-care-products.html Scroll down to ‘Company Ratings’ and click on each company name to see which products are BPA free and which aren’t…Avent, one of the most popular bottles, has BPA in it.

It’s a chemical used in some plastics. When heated, it seeps into the liquid, and it has been studied to cause cancer. You can buy plastic bottles and sippy cups, but make sure they are labled that they do not contain BPA.

i was watching a discovery channel show and the scientist people on it said that there is a chemical (bisphenol-A (BPA) in the plastic bottles that is released when the plastic is too hot…like when you wash it in the dishwasher or hot water….
hope this helps
