I am currently going through all of the paperwork to have IVF done. I am not overweight, but I must say that a gyno I saw before the current specialist did say flat out that I should lose weight (I put on a couple of kilo, lost it now). The current specialist did want to know my BMI, but as it was within the healthy range, he didn’t say anything else. I think it is because alot of fertilitly problems sort themselves out when the excess weight is lost. And also, because you are sedated during egg retrieval, the excess weight means more ’sleepy drugs’ than normal. I don’t think that you are greatly overweight, and I am surprised that they will not let you have IVF until you lose the weight. Usually it is not a problem unless your weight is associated with things like high blood pressure or cholesterol. Good luck, and I hope you have your bundle of joy very soon.

You need to go to another MD. Sounds like yours is more concerned about his statistics than helping you. I am overweight and have done IVF. I have a 5 year old that I had without help. Many women who have infertility issues are overweight. That just goes along w/hormone imbalance. I am part of a support group locally that has many positive IVF cycle outcomes with overweight women. Get another MD. Unfortunately many RE worry about their stats more than the desires of their patients.

WOW – they are putting it off for 15 lbs? I would say that I was about 20 lbs overweight going into our IVF cycle – at least 12 lbs of it was from ttc over the past year. We tried 3 cycles with Clomid and IUI and 3 cycles with injectible fertility meds and IUI – all of the meds and the stress (food was comfort food) did a number on my weight . . .
Our IVF cycle was not postponed nor was it suggested . . . my RE didn’t even bring it up.
If you are feeling less than healthy, I would take a couple of months and get in shape . . . if you completely disagree, talk to your RE and possibly get a second opinion.
Good luck!

I would immediately find a new Dr. I am also a little overweight, and they actually said that i was a PERFECT candidate. I hate to say it too, but at my Dr’s office the majority of his patients look just like me, or are larger. 15 lbs is not a major issue for you to be worrying about. Now, you should be getting weighed before each cycle though, because they can see if you are getting overstimmed by a major increase in weight. I think my first cycle I gained 5 pounds just because of all the extra fluid in my follicles!
