what can a doula do for you while you are in labor?

By pregnantnews

i have been thinking about getting a doula to help me out during my labor. my boyfriend will be there helping me out but i want to be able to give him a rest and have someone else help out too. one of my girlfriends had a doula and she said that her doula rubbed her feet and legs for her, and advocated for her birth plan to the DR’s when they wanted her to do things that weren’t in her birth plan.

so what can doulas do for you? what is the average cost of a doula?

The price depends on where you live. I am in kansas city and it’s about $400. Mine helped me find ways to deal with back labor. She applied counter pressure which helped me relax during contractions. In the moment you really freeze up on all of those labor positions you learn in class and it’s nice to have someone there to make suggestions. She directed me on what to try and helped my husband get involved. I ended up induce so would have normally been strapped to the bed which would have been awful. She knew the ins and outs of the hospital and was able to work out a deal with the nurse to allow me to get up and move. She also suggested they turn off the pitocin after a while to see if my body would take over on it’s own which it did. This was nice because I could then use the tub to labor in, you can’t use it when on pitocin. While pushing I had my husband on one side and a nurse on the other. She was there to take pictures at that point and urged me to take off my gown so my son could be skin to skin at birth. I wasn’t too into either idea but looking back it was wonderful. She also helped establish breastfeeding and was there for phone calls both before and after the birth if I ever had a question.
