Who can actually call their ob/gyn or midwife?
ByAnytime I have a question about my pregnancy, everyone always says to call your doctor or midwife. The only number I have been given has been an emergency line for when you go into labor or have some kind of pain. But, sometimes I have questions and I don’t want to call that line for some BS question.
I have a midwife. She gave me her email address, but never gets back to me.
Who can actually call their doctor?

All I have to do is call the clinic during office hours and they leave a note for the nurse to call me back. They usually call back within an hour.

I can’t call my doctor but i have a number to “page” him at… as well as the emergency line. But I feel lame paging just to ask a question… so I’ll wait until i’m in labor to do that and even then i’d rather go to the hospital and have them call him once they decide it’s not a false alarm lol. Otherwise when i have questions i just use the internet because i have SOOOO many that i’d be on the phone a lot!!!

i cant call strait to my dr. but i can call the office and if its not during there hours it will go to someone on call… but if you do have any questions i would say call L&D at the hospital, even if your not going to deliver there, you dont have to tell them who you are, just call up and ask, to see if there is a problem or you should get medical attention..

Wow, that’s TERRIBLE service!
I’m sorry…
I have Kaiser and you can’t NORMALLY call your actual doctor, but you call an advice nurse line (24/7) and they send over a note to your doctor and they get it… they then have their assistant call you back unless it’s a HUGE emergency type thing, and answer any questions you may have…
Depending on the pregnancy question, the advice nurse sometimes transfers you to labor/delivery and you talk directly to them, which I hate because I feel like it’s wasting their time…
I hope you can get some answers/help because what you described is just terrible.

i have a similar situation. you should be able to put a call into the nurse and expect a response in an appropriate amount of time.
if its a general question (not serious) get a call back in about a day or so.
if its a “this could be labor” question, you should get an immed. call back.
if not, you need to find a new dr.
i have a dr’s office with literally hundreds of patients and about 10 dr.’s and only 1 nurse…which sucks for the nurse, since she is the one who takes the ‘i was just wondering about this’ type calls. i try to remember that.
get a good (up to date) reference book. ‘what to expect when your expecting’ books cover just about everything.
good luck

I don’t know, there are always nurse hotlines you can call with questions. I think what they mean by call your doctor is call your doctor’s office and see if they can schedule an appointment if it’s that serious. You can buy some pregnancy books too and look up things on Babycenter.com or other websites too if you have questions we don’t know the answer to. Good luck.

Usually you can call your doctor or midwife’s office during their open hours and talk to a nurse at least. For general questions there are several websites that provide great information for pregnant women. Youtube even has instructional videos on how to breastfeed… I’d google your issue if you’re desperate and can’t get a doctor… But remember nothing trumps a true professional…

Your doctor should have a after hours number that you can call. No questions is a stupid question when it concerns your baby or your health. Please don’t think like that. During business hours call your doctors nurse line or call and ask to speak to a nurse. That way it won’t tie up your doctor times and you can still get a reasonable answer.

I was able to call my doctor’s office whenever I had a question about my pregnancy. The girls that answered the phone would relay the message either while I was on hold, or let the doctor get back to me.

I would say if your midwife does not contact you back, you need a new midwife.
I have a midwife, and if she didn’t call me or have a phone number for me to reach her, I’d find a new one.
But, I found a trick to emailing. Try emailing early in the morning around 1 or 2 am because maybe she checks it in the morning. Does she know it is your email address?

During office hours… if I have a question or problem I just call the “advice nurse” and speak with her. And after hours I page the doctor on call. And they normally get back to me very quickly and normally just tell me to come in the next day the office open to get checked out. There’s always someone to speak to, if necessary…. and I think thats the way it should be.
