Should I Tell Planned Parenthood My Concerns? PLEASE READ?

By pregnantnews

I suffer from a debilitating disease called Endometriosis. It causes severe, and excruciating uterine contractions/cramps during my menstrual cycle. In order to shut off my menstrual cycle, I take continuous birth control pills. (Skipping the placebo pills so I never menstruate)

My health insurance will NOT cover my pills until I get a laparoscopy. I don’t want invasive surgery and would rather use continuous BCP since they are extremely helpful and I have significantly less pain.

These pills cost me $70 per month. I thought I could go to PP to get them cheaper. I went to PP and explained my condition. I explained how I was not sexually active and I use the pills for my medical condition, not contraception.

They had me fill out various forms and on every single form I checked “abstinence” and “no” on the question asking whether I was sexually active. I explained repeatedly my reason for using the pills.

However, the “clinician” (receptionist that doubles as a clinician) repeatedly insinuated that I was lying by saying things like “Hey do you want to buy some condoms? We have them 10 for a dollar?” and “We need to get you on these pills so you don’t get pregnant.” She said these things just after I was done explaining.

When I had a pap done, the nurse said “Yes we need to do a pap. Yeah let’s see, you’ve been sexually active for four years now.” (I first had sex at age 17 but I quit having sex at age 18 after deciding I am not emotionally ready to have sex. I have not had sex since age 18.

Why are they so disrespectful? Also, I asked to get my complete file so I could see what they wrote about me, and the clinician (receptionist that calls herself a clinician) explained that their policy is to only release “pertinent information”, what she referred to as abnormal test results. They don’t even follow HIPAA. After I explained that their office needs to follow HIPAA and give me a copy of my ENTIRE file, she shut up and agreed to copy my entire file.

I am going there to get my records tomorrow. Should I ask to speak with a clinician as to whether I should continue to get BCP there? They are insulting my intelligence by repeatedly making references to avoiding pregnancy. They also assumed I was a moron by thinking they could get away with only give me my abnormal results. I have no abnormal results, so they would have given me nothing.

Should I talk with them? Also, the clinician went on and on talking about birth control pills and how they are safe and she said “Yes they are actually used to treat many medical conditions like Endometriosis.” She said it to me as if I was not aware of that, and all along I had been telling her that I use it for Endometriosis.

I don’t appreciate being treated like a child. I don’t like being told to take my pills so I don’t get pregnant. I should be told to take my pills so I don’t start bleeding and have severe pain.

Should I talk to them? Why do they think they can insult my intelligence and my medical conditions? I wouldn’t be paying $70 per month if I were using it for an unnecessary purpose (contraception.) I use it so I can have a decent life! Before I was on BCP, I missed a ton of work and school. I need to save money because I start law school in 15 months and the schools I am looking at cost $38,000 per year.
Parental Unit, you obviously operate under the “obedience over everything else” mentality. You probably teach your children to be polite and obedient at all times. However, I realized that I get much further in life when I stand up for my rights and assert myself. That office has an official policy that does NOT follow HIPAA. That is incredibly serious. They could be shut down because when I went there, they never handed me a sheet explaining HIPAA rights (as they are required to do.) I AM going to complain to their regional office. This regional office has a website in which they clearly state that all patients are entitled to their complete file, only excluding psychotherapy notes. That office will be angry when they found out that this PP is not following their policy. This office simply things they can created their own policy so they don’t have to copy as many pages. They said that their policy is to charge $5 for the file. They get $5 regardless of the number of pages.

I can say whatever the hell I want, because what do I have to lose? PP charges a flat rate of $22 for BCP (these use generics). You can only get a discount if you qualify for medicaid. I called up my local pharmacy and they informed me that they have a generic that only costs $19!!!! I have no intention of ever using PP’s services.

why not just shut your mouth, smile and nod, and take the pills already. Not everything has to be so overwrought and dramatic. You want to save money, so suck it up and get the planned parenthood pills.

2

You should say something to them and also to her boss. She shouldnt be talking to you like that especially since she works at planned parenthood. She should be a lot more considerate. I would definitely inform her boss of her attitude problem.

They were probably acting dumb as to your situation because they’re not allowed to provide low-cost birth control to someone who is not using it for that purpose. I would demand to see my chart, just to make sure that nothing is written in there that would hurt your ability to get medical insurance in the future, and if there isn’t anything damaging in it, go with it. And I don’t think that they can tell how long you’ve been having sex by performing a pap. They can just see that you have had sex.

I understand why you feel frustrated and disrespected but you have to think about the clientele they usually serve and BE GLAD they continue to offer birth control and continue to repeat things. They probably get lied to all the time and just assume you are having sex because everyone else that goes there is. You need to weigh the benefit of saving the money versus having to put up with being treated like you are stupid. If it’s only a few dollars a month you may want to go somewhere else, if it’s a lot, just put up with it and get in and out as quickly as possible. Don’t worry about “fixing” them, they won’t see many more patients like you anyway. Good Luck at law school!

who cares what they say, your still getting the pills for cheaper, right?

just go along with it, and stop arguing. you should be happy your getting the pills for a lower price. just ignore what they say.

I don’t blame you for being upset.

You’ve been through so much already, and you’re going through complete Hell.

Are you able to get a Mirena IUD for your endo? I know that many doctors want you to have had a child before they will give you one, but perhaps knowing your situation a doctor or even PP might allow you to have one anyway.

Looks like PP already breaks many rules, right?

Another option would be depo provera. That can also cause you to not mentruate at all.

http://www.revolutionhealth.com/drugs-treatments/rating/depo-provera-for-endometriosis

The good thing about that would be that if you got Mirena you wouldn’t need to go to PP at all for 5 years, and if you got depo you wouldn’t need to see them for 3 months.

Good luck. My heart goes out to you.

First of all….Parental Unit….really was that necessary??? She wasn’t being dramatic. This is a major part of her life and she has every right to be upset.

Okay now to you…You should talk to whoever is in charge and not argue with the staff anymore. Alot of people everywhere do their job just to get a pay check and nothing more. You don’t sound immature or dumb and you obviously know what you are talking about. It doesn’t matter what you want the pills for and if you said you aren’t having sex they should shut up an believe you. But you have to understand how many immature people they get in there everyday. It’s not an excuse just letting you know it may be routine for them to hear a story. But they had no right. Like I said talk to the one in charge and if she doesn’t get them to apologize or whatever you are asking of them then I’m sure there is someone above her.

Some people are rude. I’d just take it and be polite. You’ll get some satisfaction from being the better person when they are utterly convinced they are. You need the pills and this is the cheapest way to get them.

You’ve done one good thing, I’m certainly steering clear of planned parenthood.
