awkward situation, about cosleeping with a 14 month old?
Byok,without getting to personal..
Ive recently had to move out with my 14 month old
im staying with a friend of a friend
anyway,I had to leave her crib behind and im sleeping in this womans guest room with my baby(theres not room for a crib)
but I should be leaving soon anyway?
Im worried about her falling off the bed at night
shes VERY ACTIVE!! I cant be the only mother who sleeps in bed with baby so, im just wondering what all the other mothers do??since its not my house,im uncompfortable asking this woman to put her mattress on the floor?
btw. i dont have much money and i should be moving to a shelter in another state so i cant afford to invst in something i wont be able to bring with me anyway??
LOL about pillows and such
she climbs over things like a bulldozer!!
as far as pushing the bed against the wall, that covers one side, but she just climbs right over me?
and im wondering what do they do in those other countries where they dont even make such things as bed rails??
they just fall and they are fine right?
I mean at 14 months their stronger right!!!

Just tell your friend that you are worried about your kid falling out of bed and what do you think she could suggest. She might come up with a good solution all of her own.

Try putting some pillows on the other side of her. Or anything else you could find in the room to kinda of block her from rolling off.

Is there any way you could get a pack and play?

You will find that there are MANY here on Y!A who openly co-sleep without giving excuses. I am sure your friend would undersatdn abotu putting the mattress on teh floor if oyu ask her. My children sleep betwene my husband and I-well once tehy reach a few months of age, so they can’t roll out. Perhaps push teh bed into a corner so that two sides are kept from her?
At 14 months she will nto get squished without waking to get herself out.

i would just ask her. my daughter fell off the bed one night, she was fine but it scared the hell outta me. im sure she will understand, and needless to say, my daughter sleeps in a crib now.

Would it be possible to scoot the bed over against the wall and then sleep with your daughter between you and the wall?

make a pallet on the floor next to the bed that way if she falls she will fall on something squishy or you could have her sleep on the pallet.
They also make rails that slip in between the mattress and the box spring they retail for about 30 dollars (American) at places like babies r us.

I don’t mean to add worry to your life, but I would caution that if you put her near the wall, she could end up smothered between the mattress and the wall, so don’t do that! Better to put pillows on the floor besides the bed so if she did fall it wouldn’t be too hard. Also, seriously, do NOT drink or use sleep medications with an infant in your bed….you would be surprised how often a baby gets squashed by an adult unintentionally if the adult is under the influence and unaware. On a positive note, many many babies world wide sleep in the same bed with their parents.

see if you can purchase a safety net that has legs that you stuff under the side of the mattress and it goes from the head of the bed to the foot or somewhere close usually found at sears in the toddler section hope this helps

Push the bed against the wall and then put pillows on the floor in case she falls.

Try putting the baby between you and the wall if possible!

they have bedrails at most department stores, if you have yahoo account you should sign up with the local freecycle and maybe you can get someone to give you the bedrails, they are plastic and for children i had them for my daughter when i moved her to a twin bed…
ignore the people saying you are going to smother your child against the wall, its not going to happen unless you/her are zombie sleepers, but if it worries you put pillows between you and her…
maybe you could just put a bunch of blankets on the floor and let her sleep there- or even get a sleeping bag with the air matress they are around $40 and little mini beds…
unless your floor is concrete the most it will do is maybe give them a bruise, they are pretty strong at that age

At 14 months old your child should be fairly safe in the bed with you. You could put pillows or blankets around the edges of the bed. Pushing the bed in a corner against the wall would also help.
I wish you the best in your new circumstances.

If your friend of a friend is kind enough to let you stay in her home, you could ask if there is a way the mattress could be put on the floor. It would be a little inconvenient for her, but it really isn’t that big of a deal. the frame and box could be set up against the wall for the time you are there, and you should be fine.
Another idea could be to try to get a pack and play. Not the graco brand, though, since they can be spendy. Costco brand works well, and is about half the price. This would be something that you could take with you when you leave.

I would ask the person if you can put the mattress and boxspring on the floor and up against the wall. Tell her that you are worried for the baby’s safety.
Pack and Play’s are NOT comfortable! My word, have you felt those things??? This is to the person who suggested that. It’s like sleeping on concrete!
The baby could slip between the wall and mattresses when they are attached to a headboard- that is a real concern.
Were it me, I would have no issue with it at all and I hope she won’t either.
Good luck and God Bless!

My son was 8 months old and normaly he slept in his crib. One night I was feeding him in my bed and I fell asleep. Next thing I heard a noise like a bomb going off and I flew up out of that bed so darn fast. He had fallen off the bed. Thank God he was okay but I learned my lesson right there.
Have you ever seen those little cushion couches for kids? They sell them at Wal-Mart in the toy section for about 30 bucks. You could lay that on the floor for her to sleep beside of you. I would be concerned about her wandering at night, though when you aren’t awake.
If that isn’t possible…..put some pillows on the floor beside of your bed and make sure to move anything away from the bed that she might crack her head open from falling.
