breastfeeding friendly kids books?
Bymy 21month old son got a few “I’m going to be a big brother” type books when we had his baby sister (she’s 8weeks now). But I’ve noticed none of them show breastfeeding. In fact any book or video he’s ever seen always shows baby getting a bottle when it’s time to eat. What’s up with that?
I’m not going to start a whole big tyrade on breastfeeding. But it would be nice for him to see families in books/tv that do things the way we do. Anybody know of books that portray breastfeeding (and maybe even cosleeping or babywearing) in a positive and kid-friendly way?
hmmm, I wasn’t trying to start a fight about how the world was out to get breastfeeders. And of course I don’t need a book to tell my son what’s normal.
But don’t they make african-american dolls? why do they need to? would a child really be so confused playing with a doll that was a different color? would she think she wasn’t normal?
No, but that doesn’t mean it’s not nice to see depictions of the way you live.

breast feeding is very taboo(even though its better for the baby) just cause it contains “breast”. I assume some people find it offensive or dont want there child to know about “breasts”.Im not sure about childrens breastfeeding books.

I had the same problem! I did find a book called “Hello Baby” by Lizzy Rockwell. It does not show any bottles and shows the baby nursing.
Also check the internet for a “natural family” type baby store, they arte sure to have what you are looking for. We have a great on in our area, they even sell kid slings to carry thier babies around in..good luck!

Interesting point of view.
You seem to think that books and TV series should give your child the right example.
What’s wrong with the parents? Are they, in your view, just a couple of people who happen to support what the book says?
A not-even-three year old kid is going to accept pretty much anything you show him as ‘ah, that’s the way it’s done here, cool, I’m just new here’.
He’s not going to scream and go balistic when a breast is introduced, which seems to be the norm for American society at large.
If you shrug your shoulders and say it is normal, he won’t need any books to tell him that – his parents already gave him that message.

well. I would either suggest stopping breastfeeding because the world is obviously out to get breastfeeding mothers and they also want to take away a woman’s right to have a natural childbirth, etc. blah blah blah.
Or I would suggest writing your own breastfeeding book. The women there can have their titties hanging out all over the place for your children to see. Maybe you’ll luck out and get it published. The world does love boobies.

Check out mothering.com
I am sure that they have book suggestions there, seeing as they are THE site for all things natural parenting!

Well I can’t personally recommend any of these as I am looking for similar things myself. However, these ones seem to be popular, and I am planning to get one or two myself, probably at least the last two on the list.
Breastfeeding
Mama’s Milk by Michael Elsohn Ross, and Illustrated by Ashley Wolff
All kinds of animals (and people feeding) some info about differnt animals too.
Near Mama’s Heart, by Colleen Newman
co-sleeping, tandem feeding, baby wearing etc as well.
Saturday with Mez, by Lauren Serafin, Jason Rohrer, and Mez
which is about a breastfeeding toddler appears to be mostly big glossy pictures.
These are from
http://www.attachmentscatalog.com/gifts/newproducts2.html These seem to be available on Amazon too.
These ones are from amazon
he Wonders of Mother’s Milk (Hardcover)
by Mishawn Purnell-O’Neal (Author)
The Best Gifts by Marsha Skrypuch
I really want this next one about co-sleeping have heard really good things.
Biggest Bed in the World (Paperback)
by Lindsay Camp (Author), Jonathan Langley (Illustrator)
The other one I really want is this one
We Have a Baby (Paperback)
by Cathryn Falwell (Author)
It shows the baby breastfeeding etc but it includes the older child cuddled up on the couch etc. So it shows the ‘family’ interacting, not just the new baby.
Comments also suggest that you can’t tell the gender of the older sibbling.
Hope this helps.
